Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Crafting on Wikipedia

Wikipedia is one of the coolest things in the world. I don’t think too many of you would disagree with me.

Have you spent much time looking at craft-related subjects there? While you can find good general articles on big topics, like embroidery or quilting, I think there are vast amounts of data missing, especially as it relates to the modern, indie-craft movement.

For example, I can’t find any Wikipedia references to these topics:

- Aleene (or for that matter, Hazel Pearson)

- Dorset Buttons

- Adorn Magazine (Or for that matter, CRAFT Magazine)

- Knitty

- Church of Craft

- Craftster

- Yo Yo Quilting

- Latch Hook Rugs

- Beeswax Collage

. . . And these topics have only a stub of an article:

- Afghan/Tunisian Crochet

- Peyote Stitch

(. . . Naturally, the Wikipedia entry for knitting is developed in loving detail, complete with photos — as it should be. Now, I hope we’ll all pull together to give the rest of our crafty culture the same kind of love.)

Here’s all you need to add or edit material in Wikipedia. So let’s get writing!

UPDATE: Big thanks to Cowgirl53 for posting a comment about Craftacular! I’d read about Craftacular, but failed to bookmark it, and so forgot. YES! Craftacular seeks to be the Wikipedia of the craft culture. It’s new, so it needs filling. Here’s a quote from their homepage:

“Craftacular needs your help! No matter your level of craftiness you can contribute. Edit. Start a page about scrapbooking, spinning, or knitting cables. Submit your pattern or tutorials. And convince your friends to do the same. We are a community driven site, and we need your help.”

THAT sounds like a worthy endeavor.
