Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Crafting and Listening

I thought I’d share a few gems of non-crafty podcasting with you. These shows have given me hours of enjoyment while crafting. Maybe you’ll like them, too.

(A note: the links I’m giving below are for the podcast feeds. If you don’t have an MP3 player, just dig a bit on these websites, and you’ll find the places where you can listen right from your computer.)

First, for the Foodies:

- The Splendid Table is a public radio “show about life’s appetites.” It’s hosted by Lynne Rosetto Kasper, who sounds just like a favorite aunt who’s mad about cooking. The show has interviews with people from all over the food business, and Lynne takes listener questions in the second half. You’ll laugh, you’ll learn, you’ll get hungry.

- Good Food is a radio show from KCRW, Los Angeles’ public station. It’s a little more focused to LA, but still an excellent listen for anyone who likes cooking and eating. Evan Kleiman hosts, and conducts interviews with a lively curiousity, with food people around LA and beyond.

For Idea-Lovers:

- To the Best of Our Knowledge is a public radio “show about ideas.” It’s an interview show, and the topics range freely across current events, arts and culture, science, technology, psychology, sociology. Don’t let that list put you off, though, because this show’s team of interviewers is just amazing. They can bring any subject matter to a very compelling, human level. And they gently draw the most wonderful insights out of their guests. This is one show that consistently makes me forget I’m crafting.

For Arts Lovers:

-The Treatment is another KCRW program. Film Critic Elvis Mitchell interviews people from film and television, and the occasional writer. I think Elvis is one of the best interviewers out there. He has such deep knowledge of the film business in particular, and regularly asks questions that are so original, and so interesting. It’s a great podcast for film and TV geeks, and for anyone who uses the creative process to tell stories.

. . . Listen in and make stuff!

  • Wonderful! I have a few I love to craft to, that are not craft related. They are all free on iTunes:

Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me is on NPR, a sort of news quiz show. I really love it.

    APC: A Prairie Home Companion

    NPR ScienceFriday

    For your inner geek:
    Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe
    Battlestar Galactica

    For Kids: StoryNory: http://storynory.com/

  • Oh, yes! “Wait Wait” is awesome. I love where they make up fake weird news items, and the contestant has to decide which one is real.

    Mmmm . . . Galactica.

I’ll definitely check out the Skeptic’s Guide and StoryNory. Thanks for the recommendations!
