Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Taking Care of Each Other…

Alison, who runs the beloved wonderland q (and helps Marie with The Sampler), recently underwent emergency surgery.

She’s out of the hospital now, and recovering, but faces some steep medical bills — with no health insurance.

I’d hazard a guess that there’s a fair number of us out here, trying to make a go of our own businesses, who aren’t currently insured. So hopefully, we can help each other out in times of crisis.

If you can spare a few dollars to help Alison, I’m sure it will make a big difference. You can send a donation of any size through PayPal, using this email address: info AT auroraseven DOT com.

Marie is posting updates on Alison’s recovery over at The Sampler blog. And, many thanks to Jen from The Crafty World for spreading the word.

Nina’s comment is so very helpful, I thought I’d add it to this post so all could see:

“A lot of people still don’t know about Health Savings Accounts. And speaking as a family who has one because we are self employed, I highly recommend looking into them.

Basically, you are required to have a high deductible insurance plan (usually called Catastrophic Insurance) which are much less expensive but with high deductibles before they kick in. Then you can set up a savings account into which you can put money to be used solely for the purpose of medical expenses (think doctor visits, medications, minor procedures).

It’s a real solution for people who can’t afford “traditional health care” but can afford to set aside something. The beauty of this system is that unlike so many health care plans, you don’t lose the money you put in your account unless you use it and it collects interest. You also have complete control over what doctors you see. Front offices don’t usually argue with “I’ll pay cash up front for my appointment.”

US Treasury FAQs on Health Savings Account

Just to be clear, I don’t have any interest in any businesses selling HSAs, my husband and have had ours for over a year now and it gives us peace of mind.”
