I find this a little unbelievable, but CraftyPod (the podcast) is two years old today.
Now, for me to stick with anything for two years is a bit of a miracle. But for something that started out as a fun side-project, CraftyPod has profoundly changed my life. And I want to thank you all for the role you have played in that.
Back when I started making shows, I had planned to offer a tutorial, a bit of history, and a crafty resource in every show. But then it occurred to me that it might be nice to have an interview, and I met up with the insanely-talented Teresa Sullivan for a chat about beading, which I recorded on an old-school tape recorder.
Well, that was incredibly fun, and so with trepidation, I emailed Garth Johnson — and he agreed to talk with me! So then I had to figure out how to record people over the phone. After that, I was hooked — what a thrill, being able to contact people who are rock stars to you, and getting to ask them questions!
My interview with Jeff Yamaguchi eventually led to him asking me if I’d like to produce book-related podcasts for the Harper Perennial imprint. (Thank you, Jeff!) And that eventually led to my quitting my day-job, starting a little podcasting company, and producing shows for other clients. (None of them are crafty, so no links here.) And that has been an absolute joy. I’d still love to find a crafty client .
The very best part of this endeavor has been witnessing and helping to document this incredible community of creative people. I sometimes wonder whether crafters fully appreciate the magnitude of this moment — in my 40 years of crafting, this is the first time I’ve seen such widespread embrace of making. And the capacity for connection we all have courtesy of the internet, well, that’s nothing short of miraculous. I can’t begin to express how lovely it’s been to meet so many talented and inspiring people.
So, thank you so much for listening, and emailing, and commenting. It means the world to me. I’m looking forward to making you lots and lots more podcasts!
