At the recent craft supply swap, I was absoluely thrilled to find a Jiffy Stitchery kit, in great condition.
I LOVED these kits as a kid — in fact, I learned to embroider from them. My mom did them as well, and I recall the exciting trips to the needlework store together, where we’d pick out the next ones we’d be making.
Well, last night, I found myself with a couple hours of free time, but not feeling up for anything too challenging. So I busted out the Jiffy Stitchery. (Sometimes you just want to make things, but let somebody else drive . . . you know?)

Wow, what a great experience this is! I never did see as a kid how well-designed these kits were. I wish they were still in production. (I can’t find much reference to them on the web, but they seem to have been on the market into the 1990′s.)
The kits came with everything you needed — pre-printed canvas, a hank of floss, and best of all, the canvas came stretched over a piece of cardboard. The cardboard had double-stick tape on one side, so when you finished your stitching, you could stretch the canvas back over this cardboard, and then pop it right into a frame.

And, Jiffy Stitchery kits were always little samplers, involving some easy stitches and some novelty ones. I recall a strawberry design kit my mom did, where there was a stitch that made curly little vine-runners. And there was a pea-pod kit, involving a stitch that made kind of 3D, fat peas.
And the kit instructions always had really clear diagrams for each stitch.
This kit I’m working involves a Looped Stem Stitch, in which the loops will be cut afterward so that the stitches resemble a fuzzy thistle. Oooooooh!
You can still get Jiffy Stitchery kits over on eBay, and I’ve just bid on a few. I can’t think of a better summertime craft.

How happy that kit must feel to have found someone to enjoy it! All those years of lying about waiting… and now to be used so lovingly. Very cool.

We have some of these kits in stock, if you are interested in getting another one. We have a selection of 1970′s patterns and books, too. I think our prices start at $1.50 to maybe $3.50.

I just love these jiffy stitchery kits. I’m doing one now that
has an old wall phone and an old trunk.
Do you have some that you would be willing to sell?
I would appreciate you getting back to me on this.
Thank You

Does anyone know where I can get one “Jiffy” photo frame out in the 1980′s? The frame is dark wood and measures 5″X6″ outside and the inside opening is 4″X5″. I made three of the “Baby Photo” crewels in the 80′s, but had one more child and I would love to find the the matching frame. Any help would be super! Thank-You.

I made that same picture way back in the late 70′s. I gave it and another flower vase jiffy pic to my sister. She had them displayed in her home. But they were both lost in flooding of her home during hurricane Katrina. It’s so cute.
