Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Rock On, BurdaStyle (and hopefully, me too)

I’ve been wanting to sew a few dresses this summer, having scored a bunch of cute fabric at the Craft Supply Swap.

Well, the other night, I finally busted out the shears and made my first cut. The pattern comes from BurdaStyle, which I’ve mentioned here before.

It’s the Celeste Dress, which has also been featured on the CRAFT Pattern Podcast, both in dress form and in top form.

If you haven’t tried downloading a BurdaStyle pattern yet, you should! I was so impressed by the user interface. You can opt for a full-size file, to take to your local copy shop and have printed on giant paper, or you can download the pattern to your home computer. It will print out onto standard printer paper, tiled. And you get this handy guide to assembling the pages into the full pattern.

You just trim the margins, and glue the sheets together. Then, you pick your size from their measurement charts, and then cut the pattern pieces out along the lines for your size. Then you can pin ‘em to fabric and cut out. (There are cutting diagrams in the pattern as well.)

So I’m all excited to get started sewing tonight. I haven’t sewn a garment since high school, so we’ll see how rusty I am. Oh – and I’m not 100% sure about my fabric choice, either. (Although, you should know that it’s a whole lot more subdued in person than it appears in the photo at the top of this post.) But I figured that if I waited until I found the “perfect thing,” I would never get any sewing done at all. Better some progress than none.

I’ll keep you posted.
