Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

BurdaStyle’s New Look

300×270.jpg

One of my favorite places on the web, BurdaStyle, has just launched a whole new look, and some cool new bells and whistles.

I’ve blogged before about their awesome open-source patterns. And, you can also find great photo and video tutorials for all kinds of sewing techniques and projects. (In fact, you can check out the one I just posted there — my Mom’s method for making even gathers.)

One of the main reasons I love browsing BurdaStyle is seeing all the things people have made. You can see a model-shot, like the one above, and then see all the versions of the same garment that users have made — photographed on real people in real settings. It makes it so much easier to see how a garment will really look and behave, and gives me tons of inspiration.

And any time you need help with your sewing terminology, visit their Sewpedia.

Go check it out!

I’ve started getting excited about BurdaStyle, but I’ve just been shot down because their sizes don’t go very high. I’m currently around a size 20 (illness-related weight gain – I’m starting to lose it, though), and it’ll be a while before I could fit into their clothes. It’s disappointing, because I love the patterns so much.

  • I asked this question of Nora and Benedikta from BurdaStyle, and they told me that they are working on expanding the size range of the patterns — so don’t despair! (And these awesome ladies will be on the podcast in a few weeks, too!)
