K and I went to Iron Artist yesterday. It’s a hoot — and the principal fundraiser for P-town’s beloved SCRAP. SCRAP is a kind of mecca where businesses, schools, and individuals donate all kinds of random things, which creative types can go buy for ridiculously little money, and re-make into useful and artistic stuff. It’s one of those delightful places where you never know what you’re going to find, and you always leave with a great idea or two.
Anyway, Iron Artist . . . there are teams. Each team is given a big box of random materials from SCRAP. The competition starts. A theme is announced (this year’s theme was “farm”). The teams then have three hours to build a piece of art that reflects the theme.
Then, three hours of creative melee ensues. The teams are encouraged to wear wacky costumes. Bribing the judges is also encouraged.

At stake was the highly-coveted Cup du SCRAP, and unbridled glory.

At the end of three hours, all competitors and audience were shooed from the arena, so the judges could get down to judging. Meanwhile, The Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers entertained the crowd in the street, and people danced with abandon.

You could also shop for a delightful array of tchotchkis, made from SCRAP stuff. There were also “Tchochki Girls,” wandering around like the cigarette girls in old movies, hawking handmade wares. Too cool!
Of course you want to see some of the resulting artwork! Here you go:

This last one is the piece that won the Cup du SCRAP, and the People’s Choice Award.
As if THAT weren’t a great enough day, on the way home, K and I were wandering around downtown, and stumbled upon Glowing Greens, an indoor miniature golf course that’s lit by blacklights. It’s also loaded with murals and props, all hand-painted with fluorescent paints. Absolutely amazing attention to detail everywhere.
This photo is a little out of focus, but conveys the scene:

Imagine playing miniature golf inside a velvet painting. Holy crap! How many chances in a lifetime do you get to do that?

Iron Artist looks like so much fun! Not a day goes by where I wish I lived in the crafty mecca of Portland.
I work at an indoor miniature golf course that’s Hawaiian themed…but it doesn’t glow in the dark! That is so cool.
P.S. My mom always says the word “tchotchkis” but I never knew how to spell it. It’s such a fun word :) Hehe.

My husband and I ran across the underground glowing golf grotto as well (We were attracted by the glowing pirate at the front door), but we did not go inside. Did you actually play?

We did play 18 holes – it was totally, totally fun! They print the scorecards on this paper that glows under the blacklight, so you can keep track of your score. How geeky is that?

Seriously – stop posting so much cool stuff about Portland or I shall have to move there IMMEDIATELY! My parents would hate me.

Oh, my son went to that miniature golf course with his friend yesterday! He said it was cool but it’s great to actually see a picture of it – wow!

Hey guys, My name’s Brandon, and I’m just loving what you guys are saying about us at Glowing Greens. It’s and entirely family run business, (I’m the youngest of the children) and I can not tell you how much pride we all take in hearing all the good things everyone is saying about the course. We worked very hard on everything you see, 90 percent of everything was built and hand painted from scratch. But all of the hard work and sweat that went in to this would’ve been for naught if we didn’t have this fantastic Portland community to support us, so I extend to you all a very humble thank you. As an aside, for those of you who don’t know, we had also been putting on the 13th Door Haunted House by the Washington Square Mall until they gave us the boot, but have plenty of fear; the 13th Door is offically returning at a new location. Check out our freshly revamped website for details. 13thdoor.com Once again, thank you all for your support and show portland some love!
