Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Mmmmmmmmm. . . Soap.

So, if there’s one thing in this world I have a jones for, it’s fancy soap. It all began when I worked for The Body Shop, and has never let up.

Some years back, I took a trip through France, and what souvenirs did I come home with? 14 bars of assorted fancy soap. It’s insane over there — you know those Roger & Gallet soaps that sell for six or seven bucks at boutiques here? Well, they’re dumped into big bins at the French drugstores, three for a dollar, like it’s no big deal!

I do wish, though, that it had occurred to me that once I’d used all of those 14 bars, I’d have no tangible keepsakes of my trip but my hotel business cards and a 20-franc note.

. . . All of which is a long prelude to my raving about a new find — Scrumptious Suds. I found Jackie Imdahl’s business via the BOGO Sale — and anyone who gives away free soap with purchase has my attention.

I’ve tried a ton of handmade glycerin-based soaps, and have to say that I really love Jackie’s work. She bases her scents on cake recipes and cocktails. Her Mojito soap is delightful — a lime and mint fragrance, with bits of spearmint leaf for scrubbyness.

(While I’m outing my unreasonable love of soap, I should also say that the scrubby bits are one of my favorite parts of a handmade bar, and Jackie gets the bits-to-suds ratio just right.)

I’m also highly digging the Southern Strawberry Shortcake bar, which smells so yummy, and contains strawberry seeds and cornmeal for a really good scrub. And all these soaps leave my skin feeling very soft.

If you stop by DIY Alert, you can check out an interview I did with Jackie. Or, you can check out her website and Etsy store. Trust me — even if you can’t hear it, the soap is calling to you.

Hello there, Just incase you were thinking of having a go at this your self. I can highly recommend ‘the handmade soap book’ by Melinda Coss ISBN:1859740065 It’s great. Everything you need to know about how to make it, what you will need, recipes & even gives packaging ideas… Thought it might appeal to you!

  • Recognition of one’s craft is the best! Thank you!
YES! I absolutely LOVE “inventing/concocting” my flavors!
It’s so funny, when I’m vending at a show, you will frequently catch me whiffing my Scrumptious Suds! ;)

Another excellent read/tutorial soap making book is, “Soapmaking for Fun & Profit” by Maria Nerius. This book not only gives you the basics, but also ventures into the ins and outs of profiting form this craft!

    DIY Alert rocks!

  • Agreed on the soap obsession. A) Handmade soaps don’t seem to be nearly as harsh to my poor, pale, abused skin and B) they’re an indulgance that I, poor college student that I am, can afford from time to time to make me feel special and all that jazz.

    Also, they are awesome. Yes.

Diane, have you ever been to Lush? (http://usa.lush.com) although a ‘big’ company, they have quite a small company ethic. I thoroughly recommend the Figs and Leaves soap – truly yummy

Now that I live in DC there aren’t as many random craft fairs to attend. But back home, in Alabama, there was always one stall I raced to: Boll Weevil Soap Company. Check it out. There are a few new scents that I’m really curious about. Some of the scents are seasonal items (drat, missed my watermelon berry chance.)

I also love love love the face cream (if you have really dry skin.) I’m almost at the end of my pot so WOO HOO time to reorder (and get soap too!)

  • I tried it to, but the first time it went absolutely wrong. The second time went fine, luckely..
