Yep . . . this is my haul from yesterday’s Craft Supply Swap. It felt like Christmas, arranging it all on the floor for a photo.

The event itself went pretty well. I think the folks who showed up all left with good things, and we raised a nice donation for The 100th Monkey Studio‘s Art Scholarship Fund. But I do wish more people had come.

Lee took much better photos of the event than I did, so I’ll direct you to her awesome Flickr set, and instead share more photos of my favorite scores:

Duuuude! Flippin’ Japanese Temari book! I’m teaching this craft in November, and have been looking for a book like this. I haven’t found any English-language books I liked, but this is loaded with great photo tutorials. Woo!

Ever since I saw this video, I’ve been interested in Kumihimo. And look at this! A beginner book on the subject, AND a simple kid’s loom for braiding. I can’t wait to play with this.

. . . And then there was “The Red Thing.” It arrived pretty early on, and several of us were watching it throughout the swap. I mean, that’s a whole lot of interesting red yarn! There’s gotta be something cool one could do with it, right? But what??

Finally, there were no takers, and I couldn’t bear to leave it behind. But I have no idea, of course, what I’m going to make with it. Any suggestions?

    Hey, Diane.

Thanks for alerting me about the swap. A great idea and I hope they will be doing another soon, so that I can bring some stuff. I just went yesterday to see what a swap was actually all about. I scored some good stuff tho! If you decide what to do with the Red Thing, let me know, cuz I have a Beige Thing I got at a garage sale. Don’t know what I’m going to do w/it either, but knew I couldn’t leave it behind! Thanks again!

  • You could do some Kumihimo with it, practice or otherwise . . . if you have one of those little weavette looms, you could do that, you could use a double-sided adhesive tape and then wrap this ’round a container or object . . . you could knot 6/0 seed beads every so often and then wrap around an adhesive’d container or object . . . cat’s cradle etc for and with kids, use as gift-wrapping string, run it between clothespins, hooks, strong magnets, etc. and clip on birthday or seasonal cards, or kids’ artwork . . . tassels, pompoms . . .

I was basically trying to think of non-crochet/non-knit ideas, there.

Peruvian finger-weaving, or make a cardboard loom and weave with it. Use as fiber in scrapbooking, use on tags and boogmarks as the tasselly part, fiber in cardmaking, like punching the corners with a corner punch and then wrapping a length of yarn from corner to corner to corner to corner, as a nice “frame”/border for the card . . . . I’m sure I can eventually think of others.

Nice lot o’ stuff you received, there!

  • Oh, yes, there’s a yarn filled glass ornament ball o’ goodness that I’ve seen ’round the web (there’s some pics on flickr) that would be marvy for this.

Macrame depending on what’s being made, although probably for lighter applications . . . plastic canvas since you recently showed some of that . . .

I’ve been wanting to learn that! I was *just* looking at a website about that a few weeks ago. Seriously! Sheesh! Why can’t I live in Portland and come to things like swaps and Church of Craft meetings where you teach stuff I’ve been wanting to learn!!!!!????????ARGHHHHHHH!

    ;)

Looks like you had a great haul – wish I could have been there!

  • I think the red thing is a good candidate for being crocheted up on a BIG hook or on a knitting loom for a nice mermaid net sort of scarf (or a scarf and bag combo.)

And lots and lots of crocheted roses :)

The temari book is too cool.

I was thinking that the red thing would make great rag doll hair… Or you could always use it for corking. *grin*

oooh yeah i like the plying idea – you should definitely try spinning!

    or maybe crazy beaded curtains…

or if you have a christmas tree when the holidays come around, you could loosely drape it around and around and around, that looks cool in my head…

i’m trying to think of projects that would take up tonnnns of yarn, but since my specialty is small accessories, i can’t really think of anything else.

  • Oh awesome…You just reminded me that a friend *gave* me her great big kumihimo stand and a really detailed book complete with Japanese supplement pages — how lucky am I??
I TOtally forgot about that new hobby I wanted to try!!!
Let me know if it’s too hard…I don’t have the brain space for anything too difficult to learn right now…hahaaha!! ;)
