If you’re any kind of a fabric, fiber, sewing, quilting, or collage aficionado, you might want to take a look at this new special interest pub from Quilting Arts Magazine.
Quilting Arts Gifts is a collection of holiday-themed projects designed by art-quilters and mixed media artists. And while many of the projects are compelling, what really grabbed me were all the glimpses into materials and techniques I hadn’t seen before.

This is an always-fun element of peeking into magazines aimed at a specific niche audience – you get a glimpse into their deeper brands of geekery, and come away with some cool new stuff to investigate.
Like, for example, fabric Paper! Bonding powder! Painting on Color Catcher sheets!

And Maggie Grey offers up this crazy thing where machine-embroiders an intricate pattern onto tulle, somehow renders the tulle sculptable. Wow.
I’m also quite besotted with Judy Coates Perez‘ Fiesta Ornaments, which involve cutting and embossing frames from craft foil, and then stitching them to fabric on your sewing machine. (Oooooh – can I possibly do this with my layered aluminum foil?)
(Incidentally, I wish I could photo these for you to see here, but it appears that there won’t actually be any sunlight in P-Town until sometime next week. But follow that link, and there are splendid photos on Judy’s blog. And, she also made the advent calendar above.)
You can also take a look at an online extra — holiday cards made by all the Quilting Arts Gifts contributors. Many of them are simply gorgeous.

There is always something different you can do with quilts. This just proves it.
