You guys are a hoot! :) My favorite part was your mother explaining how she made book stacks (with cardboard tops) to support the drying roof and commented that there may be a more scientifically accepted method. For a tiny moment, I imagined Gingerbread Scientists in their white lab coats making emphatic notes about improper roof support techniques. :) I must say, I got a little teary-eyed at the end, too. I'm a little envious of your years of gingerbread house making. My mum's cookbook had a picture of one and I agitated for years to make it but could never persuade her. My mum is a good baker but can't be bothered with that much fuss - and to be fair, considering that I had three younger brothers, I can kind of see her point. That was great.
