Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Holiday Movies to Make Stuff By

It’s always with great excitement that K. and I bring the box of “Christmas Media” out of storage each year. It’s full of holiday music, books, and movies, all of which I probably love as much as I do because I only get to enjoy them once a year.

I thought it might be fun to compare notes on favorite Christmas films. These are mine; will you comment and tell me yours?

White Christmas. Ah, Bing Crosby AND Rosemary Clooney. Danny Kaye AND Vera-Ellen. All that awesome singing and dancing. And all that super-saturated technicolor. And quite possibly, the best on-screen Christmas surprise ever perpetrated.

Miracle on 34th Street. The original Maureen O’Hara version. (I’m not big on that remake.) When I think of the multi-media extravaganza that is the Macy’s Holiday Parade, I love to think about the fact that in this movie, Maureen ran the whole thing from a single clipboard.

A Christmas Story. Jean Shepherd is a tremendous storyteller – you can listen to some of his old radio shows here. This film, which draws on his Christmas stories and is narrated by him, is one of the funniest and truest Christmas movies there is. I never get tired of watching Ralphie discover that extra present, waiting behind the desk.

The Bishop’s Wife. Again, the original – not the remake. What’s not to love about the idea of Cary Grant playing an angel? Plus that scene where he magically decorates the Christmas tree – so cool!

Okay – your turn!

  • Holiday Inn
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034862/
I LOVE it. It’s much like White Christmas..techinicolor..yummy dance sequences..etc.

    The other I love is
    Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075988/
It’s a Muppet production and the music is great.

And then a more modern one.
    The Santa Clause
I really like it and think the concept is very cute. :)

    My favorite Christmas movie?
One Magic Christmas, in which Mary Steenbergen is so human with such a messy human life that women who lose their ho ho ho’s can really identify with her. She’s no cheerier than many of us are in a busy season with too much on our shoulders. Things are tough, then they get horribly worse. And then there is happiness. Ah, “Magic” indeed!
Your question made me look up the movie title, which led me to learning that it’s out on DVD. Excuse me. I’m off to do a little Christmas shopping on amazon.com–for a girl who’s been very, very good this year.
    Happy holidays to you.

  • I’ve never seen the original Bishop’s Wife – but oh Cary Grant, swoony swoon swoon. I’ve had a crush on his movies ever since I saw Charade!

I love love love Holiday Inn – it encompasses all of the holidays, but it’s good stuff. Scrooged is another classic – I live for Carol Kane’s scene as the Ghost of Christmas present. I just saw Elf for the first time ever, laugh out loud funny. I have to agree though a Christmas Story is probably the best Christmas movie ever!

  • A Christmas Story leads the pack, but my favorite in every season: Auntie Mame (1958 with Rosalind Russell) has a bit of the holiday in it. It should have a special place in the hearts of everyone who has built a family out of her friends.

  • I always wondered what the title of the movie “A christmas story” was. Thank you, Diane! :-)

A personal favorite is the hilarious “Christmas Vacation” with Chevy Chase. And how to forget “Scrooged” with Bill Murray? :-) Great renditions of the classics holiday movies!

  • After reading your picks, which hold some of my favorites too, I knew that I there was one more but couldn’t remember it. I finally went through my collection and I have to say that Love Actually is one of my staples for the holidays too.
