Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Taking in Strays…

A huge, busy day. K. and I booked a Flexcar to do a bunch of pre-holiday errands — one of which was a trip to The Bins.

(For the uninitiated, The Bins are actually the Goodwill Outlet store, where merchandise that doesn’t sell in the regular Goodwill stores, or isn’t in good enough shape for the stores, is dumped into unsorted bins and rolled into a big retail space for people to dig through.)

I’m getting ready to teach a big series of Recycled Sweater Crafts classes in January, so I have a lot of old wool sweaters to acquire and felt before the first of the year. You’re right, it isn’t easy to think about January right now.

BUT, of course a bunch of other stuff leapt out at us while we mined for wool. I was a little sad at the number of handmade things I found. Lots of abandoned knit hats, lots of afghans . . .

. . . This pretty little-girl quilt. It’s in good shape, and for Pete’s sake, it’s hand-quilted. I couldn’t leave it to languish in a bin. Someone worked hard on this thing!

And I found this crazy bag of crochet-covered hangers. I can just picture the fastidious lady who used to own these. I’m going to love using them.

It kind of reminds me of the Island of Misfit Toys, you know? I wonder how many I’ll be able to rescue during my January Sweater Odyssey.
