Thought I’d blog about one last Christmas book – this one, a gift from my parents.
You’ve probably already read a chorus of oohs and aahs about this one around the craftosphere. And lord knows many of us have a trip to Purl Patchwork on our List of Things to Do Someday.
Well, all the accolades are well-deserved, I think. I’d love to see more of this kind of craft book – every project is top-notch, the photography is gorgeous, and there are very few process photos.
It’s interesting how so many craft books – especially for time-honored crafts like quilting or crochet – expend so many pages on how-to information for the basic techniques. Like, every crochet book in my library has a full how-to on single crochet. And I always skip that material, because even I know how to sc.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but with Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts, I love that the book assumes that I can already find my way around a needle and thread, or find any basic info I need elsewhere. And instead of ABC’s I won’t need, I get page after page of inspiration.
But – rant over. More about the book!

I could have pretty much shown you every project in the book as a favorite. This quilt is wonderful. I want to get a pretty vintage sheet and quilt around the design so badly now. Plus, how genius is that red border? (And the quilting stitches are red, too.) Subtly saves the whole thing from too-much-pink.
Joelle Hoverson‘s chapter on “Exploring Color” is excellent, and taught me a lot about bringing colors and patterns together successfully.

And I loved how the projects are arranged by the amount of time they take to make. These Moleskine journals with patches sewn to their covers? Lovely! And less than two hours!
(Well, maybe more like fifteen hours for me, by the time I got done futzing around trying to pick out the fabrics….)

I’ve been trying to decide whether to treat myself to this book – I think you’ve made my mind up for me! Thank you!

i held out on getting it and finally caved – it’s so pretty. it’s a project book i might actually make a project from (what a concept!).

I’ve seen so many people’s resulting project from this book, that I’ve just put it on my wish list for my birthday. Of course, if my family don’t get it for my, I’ll be getting it for myself… ;)

I think that is a book that my mom and me too would love. I totally agree about books starting from a not-beginners-level is nice! it’s like going to a yoga class for the 34th time hearing that breathing is important in every practise! ;-)
the books looked like parcels, I’d love to glue fabric to a package or gift like that!

Those journals look like mailart! They remind me of big envelopes, full of luscious stuff! It reminds me to do more mailart this year, and it also inspires me for my own journal.
As for crochet, I am really intrigued to get into it, but I’m afraid I’ll need one of those how-to process books, first! These things are so lovely and tactile. And I have a great vision of a crocheted Sweeney Todd project…

Oh wow, I just got this book two weeks ago. It’s gorgeous like you say. I am about to attempt the quilted coasters. I am new to quilting and this seems a perfect beginners project. I may modify it to a table runner.
Great blog, BTW, thanks!
