Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Vintage Style Jewelry

Here’s something you might want to check out at your newsstand – this Bead & Button special ish, Vintage Style Jewelry.

The concept is fun – lots of jewelry projects, each one based on a vintage piece and re-interpreted slightly. The designs cover eras from Victorian to the 1950′s. A nice variety, too – some bead weaving, some stringing, some wire-looping, some PMC.

This, however, is my very favorite thing. Diane Fitzgerald put together a fantastic article about jewelry designer Miriam Haskell, along with a great how-to for making pendants and pins in her amazing “bead collage” style.

See what I’m saying? And Diane Fitzgerald also gives great advice for making your own findings on which to build these things. Worth the price of admission alone. Man, I worked so hard to get rid of my bead stash, and now this….

Here’s another fun thing: Jodi Dulmes takes old lamps, and beads these little covers for the bare bulbs. A fun hybrid of lamp, candlestick, and sconce. Cool!

Oh – there’s also an interesting little fold-out on the history of jewelry design. Take a look!

Podcast . . . right. It’s still coming. I know this promise is sounding increasingly empty, but I assure you, it’s not.

  • Hi Diane,

We’re pleased that you like Bead&Button’s VintageStyle Jewelry! Our editorial staff knocked themselves out on this one. We couldn’t be more pleased with Diane’s article, and, as you say, she provided invaluable information on jewelry design. On another note, we receive requests for projects with buttons from time to time, and VintageStyle Jewelry gave us a great opportunity to include projects with buttons. We purposely offered the variety you mention — something for everyone!

    Most sincerely,
    Ann Dee Allen

  • THIS magazine looks so yummy. I miss my beads! I might make a card and then embellish it with beads. And I had never heard of Haskell, being a newbie like I am. So, thanks for sharing!

Your podcast is worth waiting for!
