Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Say Hello to CRAFT 06

The new CRAFT is here! (Well, it hits your newsstand on February 5th.) What an awesome cover – these plush monsters are the brainchildren of Moxie, and there’s a very entertaining tutorial for making your own.

The theme of this issue is “Play,” and there are lots of fun projects. I had a blast producing this piece about Otedama – Japanese juggling toys. (Hi, Mom! You will get your own copy, I promise.)

In fact, Portland is totally representin’ in this issue. Lee has an awesome article about making things with old vinyl records and album covers, and Susan has a cute Quick Craft needle-book project.

Edwin Wise (co-incidentally, a former Oregonian) wrote a really interesting article about creating swirled and spiral shapes with tie-dye. I’ve never been much for tie-dye, but his process photos are so interesting. I never knew it was possible to have any deliberate design plan with tie-dye.

I’m digging Mary Beth Klatt’s pantyhose flowers beyond belief. I used to love these things as a kid. Must . . . make . . . pantyhose . . . flowers.

More coolness: turning your photos into a coloring book, making a reversible wrap skirt, and a great piece by Wendy Seltzer about Craft and Copyright.

Awesome as always . . . .

  • Yes! I just finally finished reading mine last night before bed (stayed up waaaaay too late). I really loved this issue, and the Otedama look so cool! I also liked seeing a cool article on embroidery, and the circle skirt out of a tablecloth was pure genius. Fun stuff!

  • I just got it at the Indigo bookstore in Montreal! I was so happy to see you were one of the writers in it, no to mention surprised! :-)
It’s funny because I’ve been looking for juggling balls for a decade and now, you came up with this tutorial. This is just so karma!
Their new issue looks so amazing and I love the cute monster-plushie cover.
We’re in the middle of a snowstorm right now so this issue came out at the right time. ^-^

  • Hi Diane! Thanks for your comment on my blog. I have spent the afternoon playing around on my blogger dashboard: Gave myself a title (with photo!) updated my profile and learned a lot. Tonight I am going to go to the blogger “cocktail party” you suggested during the 102 class. I’m a little late but plan to dress up and bring my best bottle of wine! Thanks. Pam (One Gal’s Trash)

I meant to congratulate you on your wonderful article! The magazine came in the midst of my flu and I took some comfort from it bundled up on the couch coughing the day away. :)

  • Can I just tell you how popular it is to make the panty hose flowers amongst Chinese crafters!!! Not as popular as knitting, but seriously—you wouldn’t believe some of the bouquets I’ve seen. Congrats on the article too!
