Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Well, Hello, Dolly

. . . A little weekend fun today – this is another favorite from Cathy. The “Doreen” in the title refers to Doreen Knitting Books of Lowell, MA. This one is Volume 102 in the series, Copyright 1951.

Just as a matter of perspective, this is eight years before Barbie. I find these dollies just charming – if perhaps slightly drowning in ruffles.

. . . As a little girl, pre-Barbie, I loved girly dolls like this. The more ruffles, the better! And I was a sucker for circle doll skirts that fanned out like this.

OOh, sequins! And an amazing wedding-cake of a hat!

If I’m not mistaken, these two are the same doll – and also the same one wearing the circle skirt above. (Versatile doll!) Gotta love those tiny suspenders and bow-topped shoes.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

  • I don’t know anout these specific dolls, but I HAD jean and john as a child in the 60′s with the exact same outfits in blue and white, and they held talcum powder. The little holes were in the head! Thanks for sharing!

  • When I was a girl I didn’t like these – but I do now. I did have one little plastic cupie that had a crocheted dress. That one I loved, and I still have it and even made some similar as gifts.

Really digging that hat with the matching pompoms on the shoes.

  • Ha ha! My parents’ names are Jean and John! Where I grew up in the 70s, it ws a big thing for the wedding car to include a cellulose doll with a HUGE crocheted skirt, bigger than the one in your third photo, covering the bonnet of the car. It seems tacky to think of it now, but back then there were probably lots of grandmothers who were busy in the weeks before the wedding making those dresses!

  • my favorite are the ones meant for covering toilet paper rolls.
my gramma made one and its the highlight of the bathroom for me.
her whole house is full of crafty things that when i go there i take a personal tour like i’ve never been there before but i’m still showing myself the best parts.

I made these more than 55 years ago. Now I want to make for our granddaughter. My copy is illegible in many parts, faded, creased, folded. Has anyone a readable (digital) version? In particular, Flora Dora, No 256. Or suggestions of where to get? Thanks in advanc
