I’ve been meaning to do a little ode to grapefruit season for a couple weeks now. I think I love grapefruit for the same reason I love crocus: they come along at a time of year when there isn’t much else going on, so you can give them your full and grateful attention. (I’ll be much more distracted during, say, berry season.)
Here’s an awesome, decadent little thing you can make with fresh grapefruit. It more than likely cancels out most of the fruit’s healthiness, but makes up for that with flavor.

Broiled Grapefruit (Needs a more poetic name . . . .)
1. Take one fresh grapefruit. If you’re anal-retentive, like me, then peel it and carefully remove all traces of membranes and pith, revealing all of that lovely color. If you’re not such a fiend, then just slice it in half and loosen the sections a little.
2. Place your fruit in a shallow baking dish, or an oven-proof serving bowl. Sprinkle on some brown sugar (or honey), and a little cinnamon. I never measure these – so really, I’m only partially anal-retentive.
3. If you like, splash on a little brandy, or sherry, or rum. But not all three. We’re talking roughly a couple tablespoons here.
4. Place your fruit, then, under a broiler for 5-10 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Watch it closely – it browns fast!
This is a great wintertime dessert, or fancy brunch fare. Enjoy!

Mmm, I grew up on broiled grapefruit in the wintertime – I’ve been doing the honey thing lately. I’ve never tried putting a little sherry on it though, nifty idea!

Okay Ms. Craftypod,
I have a name suggestion for your broiled grapefruit. The French word for grapefruit is pamplemousse. (Pronunciation: “pomp-la-moose.”) Isn’t that fun just to say 10 times fast? So how about Pamplemousse a la rhum (rum)? Gorgeous photo BTW and love the crocheted wire fleurs too. Any chance there may be a class in them at CofC? Maybe we can eat Pamplemousse a la rhum while we crochet wire flowers!?!

I LOVE grapefruit. This morning I one of my favorite things, which is go to Mimi’s and order a whole grapefruit as a side dish to my breakfast, and I have their fresh grapefruit juice, too. And I love to section grapefruit rather than slice it in half, I take the sections away from everything else so I just put the whole section in my mouth. SO… this recipe sounds fabulous. I’m going to try it. Right now, of course, I’m out of grapefruit.
