Here’s another little project that’s been going on around here lately. K’s nephew is having a birthday this week. His current passion is superheroes. And K. and I were browsing the toy aisles, trying to find a B-day gift that wasn’t . . . well . . . lame.
Then, we had a brainstorm: Why not make him a storybook, where he’s a superhero?
I love collaborating with K, because he’s so creative. He wrote the (totally cute) story, and I illustrated. We don’t have software for digital collage at the moment, so I did this stuff old-school, with photos, magazine pages, and my rusty drawing skills.
One very cool thing, though, was having access to Second Life, because you can build objects and find landscapes in there, and take images.
I could just say, “Honey, I need an ocean-scape, with a small teddy bear in a life-preserver who looks like he’s being pulled by a rope.” And K would come back in a few minutes with exactly the thing I needed. (Imagine the hours of looking through old magazines to pull that off!)
Anyway, now we just need to laminate and bind the pages. I hope our birthday boy enjoys this as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.

Well if that isn’t the best OMG gift in the world! You’ve got so many fun elements with magazine pics, the computer stuff, and the hand drawn Superhero outfit that it just sings on the the page. Lucky little person that receives this.

yeah! i’m especially impressed w/ the use of half life here. :) i hope he loves it now, and cherishes it when he’s older.

That is so cool! Seriously, it will be the coolest gift he gets, and what a treasure – imagine how much fun he’ll have looking through it with *his* kids some day! Wow!

That is the coolest thing ever. I’m glad you are laminating it, as I am sure it would be loved-to-death very quickly otherwise. MY kids’ favourite books are the board books that *my mom* made for me as a baby, they just know.

Can you please stop writing posts that are so good they insist on comments from me? I *do* have other things to do other than tell you how cool you (and Katin) are.
And, have you ever thought about us? How do you think it makes us feel when you are all crafty and creative and cool all the freakin’ time? I’ll tell you … not good.
In the future I’m going to insist that you be a little more considerate.

gl: half life – is that akin to calling second life “get a first life”? (Unlike those of us who spend our time *productively* on line, you know, reading and commenting on craft blogs . . . )
