Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Beads, Buttons, and a Giveaway

So, the Bead & Button Show (that annual megathon in Milwaukee) is in June. But online registration is now open for the over 500 classes that take place during the show. To give you some idea of the frenzy, about 80 of them have already sold out.

If you tremble for the sparklies, there’s lots to see on the show website, where you can register for said classes.

And, the nice people at Kalmbach have sent me a few copies of the show catalog and the March issue of BeadStyle Magazine.

. . . So you know what that means. Giveaway!

If you’d like a shot at winning, just post a comment here and tell me about your favorite beading project ever. I’ll choose four winners randomly, and send each of them a magazine and a show catalog.

Okay, beaders – have at ‘em!

It’s gotta be my first any only beading project (in adult memory): a thin line of beads on the rim of my Gilligan hat, which I wore all through college and beyond, still choosing that hat above any other!

  • Love your blog as I am always on the lookout for new ideas.

I discovered that I can use metal washers from the hardware store to create unique pendants. I either cover them with embroidery floss or wool first and then use beads to create designs on them. I have also strung beads on beading wire and wrapped it around the washer. Here are pictures of them: Washer Pendants

  • My favorite beading project was one of my first big peyote stitch project. It took a many nights in front of the tv, but it was gorgeous and worth the time. I’m not sure if I have a pic of it but after that I can understand why people spend hours with little beads.

  • When I was young (10?) a friend of the family taught me how to make a little picture frame out of felt. I beaded the edges and little flowers all around it. It wasn’t the first and certainly not the last thing I beaded, but it’s my favourite because my mother still has it on her desk at work (nearly 20 years later) with a picture of the family in it.

I created a thick bracelet with a collage of all my flower beads. The beads are sewn with wire onto a soft wire mesh that I cut to fit on a leather band. I glued the wire with beads onto the leather and have a fabulous cuff with every color imaginable. It definitely stands out on its own!

Rediscovering a craft that my great aunts taught me when I was a young girl. I had learned how to crochet bead ropes from them in the 60′s and then rediscovered it as an adult. It’s a lovely portable craft, makes beautiful and imaginative jewelry (You should see all my bracelets!!), and it keeps my hands busy when I’m worried or upset. Guess you could call it my own form of therapy!!

  • My favorite beading project is still to discover as I am just starting to get interested in beading. But so far, I really liked making a button cuff from the “Craftivity” book. :-)

Thank you for sharing the information about the Beadshow, Diane. :-)

  • I love beading with wire! I make broaches, pins, and embellishments.
This is my first post, but I have been reading and subscribing to your podcasts. I actually look forward to my walks while listening to the latest interview.

Oh, I have to say that my favorite “beading” project was the Froot Loop necklace my then-three-year-old son made at preschool and brought home to proudly present to me. I only wish it lasted for posterity!

  • la la la la la! beading was my first “real” craft! Hmmmm. My favorite is definitely a really cool natural necklace. I made it over 15 years ago and I still wear it. I strung it on dental floss, oddly enough. It has wooden beads, pearls, some red tubes, and metal feathers. May sound odd, but it’s really cute! Thanks for the opportunity! -C

  • My favourite is probably the purple pearl and silver set I made for my aunt for Christmas, but the most fun is the black and silver loomed-with-fringe choker with British and American flags and the word “Podcaster” :) I did it for a podcasting con, frantically weaving into the wee hours of the night. After the event I was so disgusted by the sheer number of weaving errors that I ripped it all apart. *sigh*

I’m currently working on another purple and silver set — this time for me — incorporating three sterling silver fleur de lys in time for my upcoming trip to Paris!

I don’t know if I am too late for this, but my favorite beading project is making crocheted mini-purses out of seed beads strung on pearl cotton. In the time Before Children I made all sorts of beaded crocheted things… necklaces, pouches, purses.. it was so much fun!

My favorite has to be a bracelet made with a loomed base of clear seed beads. On to that I sewed ivory pearls, rose quartz chips, copper-lined 8/o seeds, clear quartz chips, copper bell dangles, bloodstone rounds (my birthstone) and turquoise chips (my husband’s birthstone) around a large mabe pearl cab. It is my favorite because I wore it for my wedding. : )
