Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Seeing and Doing

I have so many crafty posts planned, but time and available light are conspiring against me right now. After days and days of wonderful sunshine, winter is making a teeny re-appearance in Portland this week. So, let me first defy that with these flowering branches – a gift from my parents. Ha! Take that!

. . . And then, let me recommend a good film for your Netflix queue. Helvetica is a documentary film about the typeface of the same name. It’s also an interesting look at visual culture, and how much of what we do in a day is influenced by what we see.

When I was in graphic design school a million years ago, “Helvetica” was synonymous with “Lazy” and “Boring.” So it was interesting to watch interviews with designers who love it. And then oddly, kind of funny watching those who hate it spewing their venom.

. . . But, this is the world of graphic design, I think. Strong opinions about what is and isn’t “good design,” which seem to conflict and change all the time. And, at least back in my day, lots of black clothing. :-)
