Review: CRAFTY U

It was the most beautiful, sunny day here in Portland. The kind of day where only good things happen, because the whole city is completely giddy with the weather.

One nice thing that happened today was a surprise in my mailbox. A dear friend from my hotel days sent me a copy of Rosie O’Donnell‘s book, CRAFTY U. And it’s awesome! Take a look:

These are all projects designed for kids aged 5-12. Some are pure crafty, and some have elements of science-experiment in them, like these giant sidewalk chalks you mix up and mold in toilet paper tubes. I’m kinda bummed I got all the way to 41 without ever having done this.

There are a few classics of the kid-craft genre, which I remember seeing in my childhood activity books – like these sand bottles. The photography throughout CRAFTY U is great, by the way.

Glitter-covered seashells . . . just because I think they rock.

CRAFTY U covers all four seasons and plenty of major holidays. There are spring and summer projects, as well as Halloween costumes and Christmas decorations. Back to the science-experiment element: these snowmen are molded from whipped laundry soap.

. . . And there were quite a few projects that had me thinking about grown-up possibilities. I’m intrigued by this string-art basketry idea. And there’s a beautiful Sun Catcher Mobile, and a genius idea involving pillar candles and pushpins.

Definitely check this one out. It hits stores this week.

Thank you, Hunter, for the great surprise!
