Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Vintage Book Fix!

My goodness! I have such lovely friends, who’ve been giving me all kinds of vintage crafty bounty. I’m going to feature each of these in a separate post. Let’s start with this beauty:

Pam brought me this – a 1965 publication of Craft Course Publishers. Pam has that eye, and seems to always find excellent things. This is one of the coolest shell-craft books I’ve ever seen. Look at that crazy spray of flowers hanging in the net!

The interior pages are all these pastel-candy colors, with the black-and-white photos reversed out, which is totally charming. Aren’t these purses cute?

I adore these candy dishes! Doll bodies with frilly shells? Oh, good lord!

This is referred to in the book as a TV Lamp. I’ve seen these at thrift stores from time to time – they have a little light in the back, which glows off the inside of the big abalone shell.

I love this little author page, too. Makes me want to cook up some new web photos, where my head floats in front of a lovely scalloped shell. Very glamorous.

Thank you, Pam!

  • the question is, if this is the coolest one; how many craft books about shells have you read??? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one, though I’m not a fan of crafting with shells. I think they are most beautiful on the beach – but the kitch images in your book are great though! :-)

Send me a photo of you and I’ll photoshop you a shell hat! ;-)

  • Shell art has intrigued me since I found a large collection of shells at a school I taught once. Hmmmm….I bet you could do some great hair bobs kinds of like you would with buttons…….Thanks for posting the intro for the author……oh that is classic….

  • Hi diane!! Love the shell book. i was just in Mexico where sea shell shrines were everywhere – so I came home and made one and loved every second. I used watercolors on the outsides of the shells to give them color. Now I want to make more!

Haven’t seen that one in ages! Got really fascinated with shell crafts when I was a kid and now I have all sorts of shell collages to hang up. Even have my graduation picture with one in the background–about 30 years ago! My father gave me a can of little shells he picked up in Panama and that started me on my love of shells. Now I have beach pickings from here in Washington state and some beautiful ones I’ve bought to display.

  • Now, those are fun. I looked up Ms. Gayle Pearson on the Wiki to see if we really had heard more about her, and I just hadn’t noticed, but apparently not. Or maybe the shellcraft enthusiasts just haven’t got their act together yet.

The look and mood reminds me of the “Joy of Jello” cookbook I liberated from my grandmother’s collection many years ago. Mmm…. Ring Around the Tuna….

  • Dear Hobbyist of the New Millenium,

When I wrote this book back in the sixties, I had a mission: to inspire seaside crafters for generations to come. Clearly I have succeeded.

    Yours Truly,

I love the books! My daughters (now ages 36 & 34) learned to knit using the book showing on top “Let’s Learn to Knit”. They learned in 4-H and the book shown comes for the Extension center. They were in their early teens ;). What a blast from the past…
