Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Coming at ya: CRAFT 07

The new issue of CRAFT will be on newsstands May 6th, but my subscriber copy just hit my mailbox. There’s a ton of great stuff in here, as always . . . . (That’s Natalie and her dog Lulu on the cover.)

Patricia‘s diorama project is one of my favorite things this time out. That little cabin in the background is made from wooden skewers. Awesome!

Susan has a cute button bracelet project from her new book in here, too.

I want a bamboo jewelry stand like this so bad! Matt Maranian is such a genius. Love that resin base, with the blue aquarium gravel cast inside.

Kathleen Conahan’s safety pin art blew me away. Beautiful use of such a common object. Check out the issue for a full photo of this bird on the back of a thrift-store blazer. Wouldn’t you know, Kathleen lives in Portland? I love this town!

. . . And, Woo-Hoo, I have a piece in here, too! I had a great time with this one. There’s definitely a wire-crochet monkey on my back lately.

Speaking of CRAFT, they’re involved in the Michael Miller Baby Bootie Contest. Design the most unique baby bootie, and you could win a Singer sewing machine, a $100.00 gift certificate to Repro Depot Fabrics, and a feature in CRAFT. Check it out!

  • Yes! I’ve been slowly going through mine this week. It’s all I can do to not sit down and read it cover to cover in one go. I tend to glance through the whole thing and mark the things that catch my eye the most, then read one article or project when I have little breaks here and there. And then go back – literally page-by-page and make sure I’ve read every last bit. I always get so excited when I see the copy in my mailbox!

And I didn’t realize that was Natalie on the cover! How fun!

I’m actually working on a post about crafty mags, because I acquired several in the last ten days. Seeing your post reminds me that I need to take a break from reading and start writing and knock that sucker out! :)

And congrats, as always, on the great piece. Crocheting with wire still mystifies me, but it’s so fun to read your thoughtful instructions. :)

  • Thank you for sharing this. I’ve been experimenting with button bracelets but have been using nylon thread so they go all floppy. The solution…wire – so simple, so obvious! *Slaps forehead*

Congrats on your piece about crocheting with wire. It looks great, and its something I have been considering lately.

  • where do you find your colorful wires? maybe it’s because i’m in the middle of nowhere, but i haven’t been able to find it at the big chains…

  • I haven’t made it all the way through this issue yet, but so far I’m really loving all of the shoe-related stuff! I’m especially taken with the project for replacing the fabric in a pair of chucks. Wish I had a pair ;-)

  • I’m still going over my issue over and over again. There are a lot of fun projects.

Thank you so much for your kind words regarding my diorama and congratulations on your own project! :)

  • oh, that granny square is so gorgeous. I love the coiling, too.
I’m fortunate to have an online sub. to Craft and have been memorizing some of it this week, although too pressed for time to do anything from it! I’m glad you’re feeling better. There’s a brush fire out here in the San Gabriel Valley, and it’s really wreaking havoc with my allergies. it’s very challenging..

Thanks for sharing so much pretty stuff!

  • I’m anxiously waiting for my copy to come in the mail, should I be worried that it hasn’t come yet?

Wow! Your wire granny square looks great! I can imagine the care involved.

  • Look how cute Natalie is on the cover. Ususally Craft is a little expensive for my blood, but I am a super Matt Maranian fan (he was one of my fave Craft Lab guests and taught me how to cut bamboo) so I am going to have to score this issue to see that project!
