This is the Beaverton Farmer’s Market – or at least, the very corner of it (it’s huge). K. and I usually go to the smaller Hillsboro Market, but it takes a lot longer for the fresh produce to start arriving there. Thanks to Sally’s post earlier this week, I learned that veggies could be had at Beaverton. Woo!

Oregon is blessed with a great farmers-market culture. There are markets all over town, every weekend during growing season. I go crazy for all the colors and shapes, and I never get tired of looking at abundant heaped-up produce.

K. and I have decided that this season, we’ll buy all our produce from local growers at markets. So we trekked out early, before the heat, to score this week’s fix.

Here’s everything, including a precious box of early-season strawberries, which are already nearly eaten. That first strawberry of summer. Oh, Man!
I also got excited about those fat fava bean pods. Still looking for a good recipe, though. Do you know of any?

We did pay some fairly steep prices for the veggies (I suspect that the Beaverton market is a bit more spendy overall), but I got a screamin’ deal on these gorgeous Martha Washington geraniums. They’re deck-bound, just as soon as it cools off out there a little.
. . . Speaking of which, hot enough for ya? Wooooooooooooooo!

Heee! I was just commenting on these pics in Flickr and realized I could pop over and read the full story here.
As I mentioned on Flickr, one of our favorite memories of our trip to Portland last year was stumbling upon the FM at the University. We were on the tram (or is it the train? the handy little public transport) and were sitting next to a nice woman who mentioned she was heading to the Farmer’s Market. We decided to hop off with her, and – man! – we we glad we did. We really couldn’t buy much since we were traveling, but it was such a fun place! The produce was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. And it smelled incredible! I remember walking up and the whole area just smelled … FRESH. And there was great music and fun people and dogs – it was a blast. I did manage to pick up some Oregon walnuts for my mom. Such good times. I hope we are able to hit another FM this trip.
As for the Fava Beans (I wondered what those giant pods were!) I hear if you get a nice chianti and the liver of an census taker ….. Sorry. Couldn’t resist the Hannibal Lector joke ….

My favourite thing to do with fava beans is to pod them, blanch them very fast and get them out of their leathery grey shells (although if you have very young ones you may not need to do this). Then you fry them up with pancetta, drizzle with really good olive oil, toss in some mint and flat-leaf parsley and then you go om nom nom :) People have been eating fava beans this way since at least the 14th century so I figure it has probably got to be the best thing you can do with these beans.

:) I just love the farmer’s market! You know that summers is here when it opens with tons of new fresh products and people! ^-^
Thoses geraniums are beautiful! It’s hard to resist on buying flowers!
It reminds me that at our farmer’s market in Montréal, named Marché Jean Talon, we have this little store with -tons- of specialized produces. Like mapple sirup, wine, cheese, jams… *drools* I really need to head over there this week! :)
By the way, on the Craft Mafia pictures, I’m the one knitting, in the middle! ^-^

How fun! I love going to our local farmers’ market, but I do get the sense that it is more boutiquey than many (crepe maker, artisan cheeses, only a couple produce vendors). There are a couple larger ones close by that I’d like to check out.
Hey, I’m looking for a digital SLR – what kind of camera do you have?

Fava bean recipes? wow. I’ve never even had fava beans, I don’t think. But aren’t farmer’s markets great? And you have photos on Flickr? Where have I bean?
bean? hahAAHA!!
The point is, it’s too hot for me to go outside. I spent the morning at the movie theatre, and now I’m in the house. So, yes! It’s hot enough!! I’m truly an ugly American. But I’ve unplugged all the appliances I’m not using. I hope that counts for something.
Thanks for fun pictures! I’m inspired to go to Monrovia’s evening farmer’s market this Friday!
