Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Ribbon Craft! Smashing, Baby!

A little nonserious crafty fun for your Sunday. This little beauty is Copyright 1973 by Harold Mangelson and Sons. The author is Jo Gilroy, who owned a craft shop in East Peoria, IL.

Just to give you a little scope here. . . this ribbon crafting involves cutting short sections from wide acetate ribbon, and then stretching them hard on the bias. That stretch would kind of “break” the acetate, and also fold the section in half. Then, you were supposed to pin and glue the ribbon to a styrofoam shape of some kind. That was one layer. You had to repeat the process enough times to cover the foam.

. . . Which, when you think about it, requires some pretty impressive precision.

Still, any craft that involves sticking shiny things into styrofoam with pins is A-OK in my book, because what could be more instant-gratification?

This one’s called the Saturn Splendor Ornament. That’s a lotta pins!

I think Jo Gilroy definitely had the kind of uber-steady hands that would have made her a valuable asset on the Martha Stewart crafting team. This candle holder is reminiscent of some of those too-precise-for-mere-mortals-yet-undeniably-fabulous MSL projects.

Just a random observation here – does anyone else get just a little creeped out by these 1970′s doll heads? Part elderly man, part baby, part pug. Mysterious and spooky…

  • You are so right! The Santas of this genre always look like child molesters. Who would want to sit on THAT guy’s lap? Sorry I missed the button fest at C of C today. Still sort of on hold after my little surgical thing. The Percocet naps are quite nice however.

P.S. Can’t wait for you to see the vintage egg carton (styrofoam!) craft book I found for you…talk about instant gratification!

Oops, I mean Saturn, not Satin. But it does look satiny.

Khay, I’d recommend looking on eBay for the vintage titles featured in this post. They are out of print.
