Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Waxing Enthusiastic (ACK, what a bad headline!)

Here’s another favorite from my vintage stash. Whatever you may think of the decorative value of these candles, you gotta respect the sheer technical skill of author Beverly Ferguson. (This one’s Copyright 1966 by Craft Course Publishers, Inc. ACK! It’s as old as me!)

So, check this out: first, you melt a thin sheet of wax on a cookie sheet. Then you peel it back up. Then you cut out individual petals and leaves with cookie cutters.

Then you shape those petals with your fingers (warming the wax with your body heat so it’s sculptable), and then assemble lots of petals into flowers. Then, you use an “electric pen” (soldering iron?) to attach the flowers to a pillar candle.

. . . So imagine the hours of work that went into these!

And these! I honestly don’t think I have the surgeon’s hands or the patience for this craft, and if I owned one of these candles, I’d put up a protective fence around it so nobody would ever light it. But I do think they’re very cool.

I dig decorated candles in general, so here are a few links to other ways to go about it:

- Here’s a decoupaged candle I did a while back on DIY Alert.

- Here’s one with pressed flowers and leaves, from Happy Living.

- Craft Lab did a whole show about candle-decorating. Some cool ideas!

- This eHow employs candy molds.

- super-easy concept involving scrapbook embellishments, from The Craft Ark.

- Crafty Chica’s also-simple decorated tea lights.

Have fun!

Wow. Those are amazing. Maybe a simple one would be fun to do, but most of those…I’m with you on the surgeon’s hands, patience, and Do Not DARE Light This!

Another wow: Wood roses (left of the white poinsettas). Used to have a garden wall covered with them, but haven’t even thought of them in years. Nice to see them again, even in wax.

Ooooh. I wonder if you can buy a wood rose plant?! Would it grow here? How cool would that be? Off to find out now….

  • I appreciate this artistry. It’s amazing how intricate and delicate the detail is on these. But, is it wrong to not like wax? I don’t like it. I don’t like it, Sam I Am. I don’t like the feel, smell, look, having it dripped on me in the dark –

    I went too far, maybe.

Anyway, you know I always like the stuff you share with us… except I can only appreciate that many people love wax as a medium and use it in a variety of ways, but I don’t like it.

    You didn’t ask me?

    oh.

Oh, wait! I love those strawberry-flavored wax lips you can wear at Halloween! Does that count?

    okay.

Those look beautiful! And I think I have a very high amount of patience, but don’t think I could do this project. LOL I have stamped on candles before and that is faster but not 3d of course. :)
