Insert beady-eyed pun here…

in Bead Crafts, Craft Books

I’m such a fan of hybrid crafts – combining one kind of making with another to get something new. So I was excited to see this bead quilling on the cover of the June Bead & Button.

Are you familiar with quilling? It’s an old craft where you twirl thin strips of paper around a needle tool to assemble lacy images. This image is from Erica’s, where you can also look more deeply into the subject.

So, beader Kathy King has developed this cool method of building these long chains of seed beads, and then using them like long strips of quilling paper. (Follow that link to see some crazy-amazing seed bead work.) I like the look – especially as combined with the felt on these bracelets.

For you wire crochet enthusiasts, there’s also a piece in this issue about this twisted beaded crochet chain. Brenda MacLellan has written very good instructions for working the wire and hook.

. . . And hey! Look at this! Glenda Paunonen has a tutorial for making beaded buttons from scratch. As in, not beaded on a button base, but constructed entirely from beads. Cool, eh?

Okay, and if you don’t have your beady fix quite yet, I have two copies of this magazine to give away, courtesy of the nice people at Kalmbach. Just leave a comment on this post (go for it, you international readers), and I’ll pick two at random on Tuesday.

If you’re within teleport distance of Milwaukee, don’t forget that the Bead & Button Show is coming – June 1-8!

  • Hi - I came across your blog because you were talking about my bead quilling article. Now I've spent time going back and reading all the past entries. Great blog! I love all things crafty. Thanks for talking about bead quillng. I hope lots of folks try it. It can be time consuming but the results are very cool.

Hello ~ love your blog! Thanks for posting all the cool stuff and great interviews. May you have a great art day!
  • Okay, I mean nothing by this at all, but I've decided that you're like some kind of pusher or something. I LOVE these beads that look like quilling, because I don't like quilling! Isn't that odd? So now I'm going to have to simulate quilling by not quilling! This is an ASTOUNDING IDEA!!

wait. let me put down my caffeine.

Anyway, I want to do all of this, but I'm exhausted from meeting deadlines. And tonight I have me the DT's for ATCs. I think maybe I could use some seed beading on a set of ATCs!

    oh, life is good.
  • I have the Klutz Press quilling book. The title is Twirled Paper. So far I've only made a kooky-looking bird, but it was really fun to do! And it's easy if you're not trying to get too precise. Like most things it'll take practice to get really good, but unlike some things - I could jump right in and make something I was happy with straight off.
  • Besides wanting to score the magazine is the clear pendant from the necklace clear shrink plastic piece?

    Have a beady weekend.
  • When I got this issue, I couldn't wait to try the bead quilling! Bead crochet is also on my list of techniques to learn :) I hope I win the magazine b/c it will give me an excuse to BUY MORE BEADS! Thanks for the beady-goodness, Diane!
  • I do love your blog...although I do seem to buy more craft supplies after reading it! Keep up the good work!

  • I love quilling! Well, I love how it looks but I've never tried it. And with beads? Cool!
  • Angela
Count me in for the drawing. I think I need to go get the bead & button magazine -- I love the way quilling looks. And everything looks better with beads.
