Market Day

in Growing Stuff, Making Food

This is the Hillsboro Farmer’s Market, where K. and I tried to score local produce again today. Still no luck there – oh, except for these:

. . . Which are just about my favorite thing in the world today. I hate cooked peas, but I could eat them raw, pods and all, all the livelong day. And I pretty much have – I’m really high on chlorophyll right now.

But that was absolutely all the veg that was to be had at Hillsboro. Which is sad, because it’s such a great little market. Just slow to begin. The booths you see there are all crafts, potted plants, and food vendors right now. Anyway, we did score some freakin’ amazing pork buns and lumpia from this nice lady:

. . . And ate them while enjoying this view:

But then, we still needed produce for the coming week, so we jumped back on the train and headed back to the Beaverton Market. Crowded, but also loaded with planty goodness.

It’s so wonderful to see the strawberries arriving en masse! These are Jefferson Reds, and they’re sweet and juicy and perfect. Our pint is completely gone already. We’re like locusts sometimes.

So here’s the week’s haul. We loved the fava beans last week, thanks to Jess’s comment on last week’s post, so we loaded up again. And we got a bundle of garlic stems and buds, which supposedly you can steam of saute like asparagus. I’ll make some kind of egg dish with those two leeks, and then we have lots of spinach to round things out.

‘Scuse me now. I need to go eat some more pea pods.

  • PEA PODS IS DA BOMB
  • I didn't work at the market today and I'm missin' the veg!

I haven't ever tried fava beans, now that you're going back for more, I gotta give them a try.
  • mmmmmmmm...yer makin' me hungries!
  • What a gorgeous fountain and view at the first market! I love my market, but it's in the parking lot of city hall/the police station. Not exactly surrounded by lush natural beauty. Nice haul too! Your season is a little ahead of ours, I'm still munching on rhubarb - I can't wait for strawberry season!!!
