Hello there! I'm Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Best Kid Crafts Ever (and apparently, adult crafts, too).

Here’s a treasured recent eBay score. I had this book as a kid, and was seriously obsessed with it. At one time or another, I tried nearly every project in it. Copyright 1968, 2nd edition 1976. You can also find copies here.

I used to spend hours looking at some of these photos. I dearly loved these sock dolls.

Always wanted to try this rice-paper dyeing. And have clotheslines strung above my head like that.

. . . And how many times did I try to replicate these papier mache animals, with no success?

As I was taking pictures for this post, though, I made an interesting discovery. The pages of this book strongly resemble my crafting efforts of the past year:

Spool knitting, basket coiling . . . .

Pasta crafting (I do love these snowflakes). . . .

Salt crystal gardening!

. . . So clearly, I am still very obsessed with this book! Maybe you’ll be hearing a podcast about these in the not-too-distant future:

Okay, just kidding.

I had that book too! I still have fond memories of it, even though most of those memories involve a finished product that was nothing like what they showed in the book…

And I always loved the snake’s fruit leather tongue.

  • It’s probably just me, but that cover looks kind of… threatening. Wild eyes, prominant teeth…. “Be good, little Bobby, or the Punishment Bunny will pay a visit tonight….”

  • We had that book when I was a kid! I looked at it so much, especially when I decided to plan my own summer day crafts camp for kids. I was about 11. I made flyers took them around the neighborhood and soon had about 8 kids from 4-7 who were not the least bit interested in sitting still and doing crafts. It was mayhem and I don’t think it lasted more than 1 or 2 days. I think they were bored. But, how could painting rocks and eating cookies be boring??
