Deck Makeover Part 3: Flora and Fauna

I’m so enjoying our deck, now that things have begun to flower in earnest! This is my view from inside the apartment.

A couple of my most-abused plants have struggled back from oblivion. I love that splatter-faced Torenia. It’s managed to re-seed itself for three years now. And, I have no idea what this pink-flowered, silver-leafed creeper is, but let me tell ya: it’ll live through anything.

We also put out a bird feeder, which has been so much fun. This feeder originally belonged to my great-grandmother; I gave it to her when she moved to her last apartment, as it had a nice deck for bird-watching. The feeder came back to me after she passed away. It’s lovely to have it in use now.

. . . Although, this squirrel is taking the most advantage of the free seed. I kid you not, he feeds at this thing for hours at a time. He’s partial to the sunflower seeds, so he knocks great handfuls of the other stuff out of the feeder so he can get to them.

(He does share with the birds occasionally.)

Look at the mess he’s made! And that poor little fern is nearly buried.

We were being all careful of him, taking photos through the screen and everything, but then this morning he made it clear that he really doesn’t care if we’re around or not – he’s just here for the food. We opened the screen this morning and K. went out and sat on the deck, and he just kept eating. I’ve named him Mr. Creosote. (And ten points to you if you get the reference.)

Have a great weekend, everyone!

  • Hi CraftyPod!
The pink flower with the silvery leaves is a perennial plant that looks like it died over the winter but will come back every year – called purple dragon lamium. Squirrels are territorial and will keep coming back to your place once they’ve found food. What a mess they made. I had to buy a bird feeder with a self closing trap door over the food when anything heavier than a bird lands on. When a squirrel steps on the edge the trap is closed and he has to scrounge around on the ground looking for fallen seeds! love it! They have these at your local garden center (usually). Love your deck. Keep on!

  • Your little squirrel friend looks like he may need some low-carb sunflower seeds soon.

    (The deck looks great.)

  • Not sure if you like the squirrely or not, but in case you don’t you can place a metal pie plate under the bird feeder. They don’t like the sound of their nails on it and avoid it. He makes quite a mess.
