This is my micro-portrait of the Beaverton Farmer’s Market today – a sea of people, and a sea of strawberries. It was great to be back after a couple weeks’ hiatus.

We’re in high strawberry season now, so all the vendors had flats and flats, and great prices. The Mt. Hood variety is sweet and lovely. I’m going to try some of that Balsamic vinegar syrup for these – at long last.

This photo’s by Uncle Kate.
Now cherries, on the other hand, are just coming into the market now, and hovering around five bucks a pound, ouch. Nope, too early – I much prefer their flavor a couple weeks into the season.

A ming-boggling array of flowers this week. So much abundance of everything, in fact, it’s hard to leave any of it behind. But let’s face it – overbuying just leads to a rotting crisper full of guilt.

Here’s the week’s haul. I’m gonna buy favas until there are no more. And these potatoes are crazy-amazing as Crash Hot Potatoes. (Try that recipe without delay.)
Speaking of early-season fruit, we scored some raspberries at the Denison Farms booth, and also got to say Hi to Sally. These little babies are destined for muffins.

ooo, and those crash hot potatoes are my favorites! caprial & john call them “smashed potatoes” and fry them briefly in hot oil instead of baking them. i will try baking them next time! :)

Hi there! Muffins, good idea! I see you scored some carrots, I missed those. I know what you are saying about moderation, it’s hard to leave any behind, but I know about things hiding in the crisper.

I have raspberries in my backyard garden, thanks to the lovely folks who owned the house before me . . . but none of them make it into the kitchen! A few will ripen, be duly consumed, and then the hunt will begin for a few more ripe ones!
