I just had to share these with you. That K. is one crafty dude.
So, while my bro and nephew were here, K. and I came up with a card game. We all played it a bunch, using a regular card deck – really fun. It’s a pirate-based game, and forgive me if I don’t share details. We may want to try to do something with it one day.
Anyway, then one morning, K said, “I’m going to make a real pirate deck for the boy.” And he sat down and about six hours later, emerged with this:

Good lord! It’s lovely. Ships on the backs, cannons on the fronts.

. . . And face cards and everything. Now, of course it bears mentioning that yes, these images were pulled from the web. We’ve made one deck for personal use, which is okay under Fair Use law. If we (or you) were to create a deck to sell or distribute, of course it would be necessary to obtain permissions or create original art.

Here’s the best face card of all: my nephew Photoshopped into the person of a British Navy officer. We just tucked this into the deck and let it surprise him during the first game. “Heeeey, that’s ME!” What a great moment.
. . . Of course, five minutes later, he was telling us he wished Uncle Kate would have made him a pirate instead.
If you’re interested in a tutorial on making your own deck of cards, leave a comment and I’ll get Uncle Kate to post one here.

Wow, way to go, both with creating a game, and creating the deck of cards to play it with! I hope to see it on the shelves at Finnegan’s someday!
