I’ve been watching episodes of Quilting Arts TV lately, and talking to the television. Do you do that? When I watch how-to shows, I’m always commenting: “You don’t say . . . I didn’t know you could do that with covered buttons.” Or, “Get outta here! I gotta go get me some of those paint sticks!” As if the people on the screen could hear me.
Anyway, Quilting Arts now has a PBS series to go with its great magazines. The shows are running on lots of local affiliate stations – you can get a complete list of showtimes here. Each episode is devoted to a particular theme, like Surface Design, or Photo Fabric Collage.

. . . Which is to say that this is a show about art quilting rather than traditional quilting. It incorporates a whole slew of interesting mixed-media techniques, along with hints and tips for the construction of quilts. The work featured is mostly small-scale, wall-hung pieces, and the featured artists work in paper and beads and stitchery as well as fabric. I’m not a quilter, but I’ve picked up so much inspiration for crafting!
In addition to fabric-based techniques, the show also has a digital segment, where you learn little tricks for using your computer and printer to create mixed-media art. (As in these kaleidoscope cards by Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero, created digitally, printed to fabric, and then quilted and embellished.)

Just a sampling of stuff I liked from the first series: this rubbing technique Shelley Stokes demonstrated on fabric is so freakin’ cool! As is Beryl Taylor‘s fabric paper. And Marinda Stewart‘s fabric photo collages (the red quilt below). I could go on and on, but you can also pick up program notes on the show’s website (you’ll have to register for them). There are project instructions there, too.

The show is hosted by Pokey Bolton, an avid art quilter and founder of Quilting Arts Magazine and Cloth Paper Scissors. She shares a lot of her own techniques and finished pieces.

So – needless to say – definitely check this one out! There’s a second series coming, which begins airing this summer according to the show website. On my local PBS affiliate, they’re midway through the first series.
You can also pick up the first 13 shows on DVD over here.

Yes, I agree with Hanna, it seems tempting. My only concern is can I read those DVD on my reader here in France ? Not sure about it, but I do love their magazines.

Thank you so much for this. I love Cloth Paper Scissors magazine, and I would love to have a DVD to pop in on Saturday morning when I’m alone and doing some crafting. Talk to the TV? Are you kidding? I talk to it all the time! Sometimes with an accent! haha
