Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Rachel and Diane go to White Castle – I mean . . .

I had such an awesome crafty day with Rachel last week, and although I managed not to take a single picture all day (lame), I wanted to share some of the fun.

First stop was a trip to the Knittn’ Kitten. On the outside chance you haven’t heard me wax rhapsodic about this place dozens of times already, “The Kitten” is Portland’s very own craft-supply thrift store, and an absolute must-see if you’re near PDX.

So here’s what I scored this time. All that fabric up top, for starters. Some of it’s yardage, some of it’s scraps. I have enough for a couple new totes, a skirt, and several bits to tuck away for a secret project.

Here’s quite a lot of bias tape and ric rac, along with some lovely ribbon scraps, a length of braided trim, two handmade doilies, and a beaded flower. No, I didn’t really need all of it. That’s not the point of my story.

I always grab handfuls of floss and tapestry yarn when I’m at the Kitten. How can you not, at prices like those?

Here’s my latest collection of Tantalizing Little Bags, which the Kitten does so well. I have some freakin’ amazing glitter-tipped vintage stamens, some leaves, some glass buttons, and these gorgeous jumbo paillettes. Those paper doilies are for an experiment. Mwahahahaahaha!

Last but not least, this straw bag, which is on deck for some sweet embellishment.

There’s nothing like that Kitten Afterglow….

    Diane -
What’s the dark purple thingie in the photo? It looks kinda like a tatting shuttle to me.

Your photos remind me that I don’t live in the Craft Mecca that Portland is. Darn…

  • Holy smokes! I didn’t realize how well you made out! I was too caught up in my own haze of vintage/craft/thrift fabulousness! I’ll be posting about my scores soon, too – just trying to catch up after being out for a week! :-/

I’ve said it, oh … 4 million times, but what’s once more:
    Best. Day. EVER.

    Thank you! :)

  • Don’t you just love the oldschool packaging on those trims and bias tape ?!!
I always fall in love with those, and it breaks my heart to have to sometimes open them in order to use their content.. It feels wrong in a strange way to use it.
I would love to own a time machine and get back to a place in time and visit craft suplie stores. Wouldn’t that be the best? When I make a time machine one day, you’re very invited to come along! Let’s start at a Singer Sewing Club in 1925..
    Love the giant pailettes too!

  • That purple thing is a pack of the most interestingly-shaped paillettes I’ve ever seen. There’s a hole in the top, and then the rest hangs down. Crazy cool!
