Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Check Out CRAFT 08!

Yay! The new issue of CRAFT hit newsstands yesterday! It’s awesome, as always. I’m super-excited to see this focus on weaving. That hunky cover guy, btw, is Travis Meinolf, who does amazing work. Be sure to read about his Blanket Offer. He even designed this:

An actual working cardboard loom! You just cut it out of the magazine, follow the tutorial, and start weaving.

Kristin has a great how-to for building a simple wood loom in here, too. Go, Kristin!

Too many cool weaving projects to show you – this is my favorite, by Jane Patrick.

. . . And there’s lots of awesomeness of the non-weaving variety, too. Like this bedcover made of silk scarves by Lindsay Brown and Sarah Gee. What a perfect summertime blanket!

Always happy to see a profile of my favorite maven, Brini Maxwell.

I’m pretty thrilled to have three pieces in this issue, too. There’s this how-to on making carrying cases from neckties.

. . . And also this piece on Crafty Portland, which profiles my favorite local stores. And I also did a how-to on building a Crafty Google Map of your town.

Definitely, check it out!

I didn’t know about your Google Map. That is cool! You’re giving me ideas for my own site.

  • rock on! I am going to have to get that issue now. Love the necktie eyeglasses cases. I have a huge stash of ties that (someday) I am going to unfold, iron out, and use the fabric in little triangles to make a quilt. I want it to look like the wall hanging from Best In Show, the one the boys hang on their hotel room wall. :)

  • I’m talking about you today on my podcast. I just ordered and got my loom today! I can’t wait to go to the beach and weave, thanks to you!!

  • That’s the first issue I’m REALLY tempted to try to get Diane, specially with the Crafty Google Guide! I want to make one, it sounds so fun and I haven’t been checking google maps out that much. I think I need to soon. :-) Congrats on the articles, they look great!

  • Wooo Woooo! Hooray to have more of your goodness in CRAFT! I didn’t even see your name on that project. I bought some neck ties some time ago to do ‘something’ with and this is it! I think it’s about time Jason got a fancy case for his sunglasses. I love the portland profile by the way. Ohh I can’t wait to go there someday…. Sooner rather than later hopefully!

  • Hello Diane! :-)

That Google map tutorial you did is so neat! It makes the geek inside of me very happy!
And I wish to visit Portland in a near future, (No, Let’s re-phrase that… I -will- visit Portland in a near future!) so the city guide you did will be of a great help! You think they would like one for Montreal? :-p

If you want to do more crafty guy watching, you should really check out Debbie Stoller’s “Son’s of stitch n’ Bitch” book. It’s the first time I’ve ever been caught drooling at a craft book! Wo.
