Deck Makeover Part 4: Miscellany

in Growing Stuff

Taking a little deck-break in a long working weekend, and thought I’d share a few pics.

We’re very excited to see our first ripening cherry tomatoes! We may have finally found tomato-success this year (not that I want to speak too soon) – using a cherry variety for hanging baskets, and then hanging it high enough to get plenty of sun. Now, if I can just manage not to kill it by forgetting to water….

If it lives, I’m definitely making these.

Our lettuce plants are all bolting, but I’m curious as to what a lettuce-flower looks like, so I’m letting them do their thing.

Speaking of reaching for the sky, does anyone know why my Hens and Chickens are doing this?

Miracle Fuschia: this cute baby has clawed its way back from 80% death at my hands. So cool – I adore these flowers!

And the French Marigold has gotten all prolific.

Hope you’re all having a nice, relaxed Sunday.

  • I want those roasted tomatoes when you're done, which means, you should rent a car, too.

I'm SO looking forward to finding out about your mom's entrepreneurial endeavor!

But I hope I don't have to write that word again. I have to go lie down, now.
  • Your plants look wonderful. I'll be waiting to see the bloomin' lettuce. Never even had thought about what it's flowers would look like.
  • Love your hen and chickens! Mine didn't do that last year; they were too crowded, just sent out shoots off the side of the planter. I transplanted the shoots and they're doing great.
My cherry tomatoes look a lot like yours in these pics. I should be able to pick the first tomorrow -- or soon!
And that lettuce? We have pet rabbits. Mine never, ever gets a chance to get that big. :)

I love Hens and Chicks!!! My grandmother had them growing in her rock garden. When I was around 3 or 4 years old she gave me some of the teeny tiny chicks to take home to my garden and they've been growing and multiplying ever since. When she died, we dug up as many from her garden as we could and brought them home to add to our "flock". We have zillions of them now! Every so often one of them sends up one of those weird flower shoots and a bunch of new chicks appear. It's totally unpredictable. Your cherry tomatoes are going to be delish! Thread some on a bamboo skewer and cook them on the grill until they just start to burst. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve on crusty bread. Yum!!!

My hens n chicks are going thru the same blooming, too. My neighbor says they do that when they no longer can send our new chicks. It's like a life celebration before it croaks. Since mine have croaked that bloomed, I'm guessing she knows more than I do.
  • I made the ricotta tomatoes last weekend- so, so good!
  • My hens and chicks are doing that too, Diane! They just started growing up, up up. In a couple of weeks, the big offshoot will turn into a sort-of flower with a ton of little baby chicks. It's awesome.
  • Sure hope the tomatoes do good they are so yummy. Your flowers look so pretty. I have never seen Hen and chicks grow up like that, what are you feeding them?
Have a great week and if you get a chance please come by my blog and get your name in the hat for my giveaway.
    Blessings, Karen

I guess your hens and chickens (never heard that name before) are going to flower - just like the lettuce!

Oh the tomatoes look good! Sadly we haven't planted anything here at all. It's selfish on my part but I don't want to take the time to figure out how to grow things in this environment when I have to move in a matter of months! But when we are to our next spot - definitely planting lots of things! I miss my flowers a lot. And my kids would so love growing veggies. Okay maybe I'll see if it's too late to grow something.

And I had a mother in law tongue (that's what it's called right?) that was an off shoot of a plant that my Great Grandma had. There's more where that came from as my Grandma still has one that won't give up LOL but I still miss mine. :)
  • Your tomatoes look great! We've been eating our first cherry tomatoes of the year too. I planted Argula lettuce in our front yard and let it bolt. I pick the flowers and use them in vases and in salad. They have a nutty taste. It comes back every year, I don't have to do anything. Love that!
