Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

It’s so PC

Sorry to disappear there – it was a big week for deadlines around here. But, in between other things, I’ve been noodling with plastic canvas. Made a couple good discoveries, too.

First, there’s Sugar n’ Cream. An inexpensive cotton yarn, available at any big-box craft store, that turns out to be awesome for pc-work. It’s very non-stretchy and non-fuzzy, so it makes for nice, crisp stitch definition. Nice colors, too.

This here’s a business card box in progress. Up top, a gift for someone special. The whole thing has a slightly 70′s ring to it, which is of course what I adore about it.

Second discovery was 14-count canvas, which appeared at Michaels last week. I’ve used 7 count and 10 count (the left and center samples in this photo), but hadn’t ever found 14 before.

Look at those teeny tiny holes! I’m not even sure what kind of floss and needle will work with this stuff. But I’m certainly excited to figure that out!

Hope you’re having a nice, creative weekend. And, you’re right, I AM late with the next podcast – thanks so much for noticing! Don’t worry, it won’t be long….

  • Hooray for the return of PC! I was just looking at a vintage craft book tonight that had some cool Christmas PC projects and thought of you. Fabulous color combos and designs! Way to rock the ole PC! :)

I used to use small plastic canvas like the 14 count for cross stitch when I was young, it worked really well. Blunt needle and embroidery floss. Your gift box is so great, very nice work. I’m glad you discovered Sugar n’ Cream, I just finished making two dishcloths out of less than one skein. Can’t beat the price!

I’ve taught several classes to my local chapter of EGA using 14 ct. perforated plastic. this stuff is great for quick projects or for projects that need more stability than you get with a fabric ground! You stitch on it pretty much the same as you would stitch on 14 ct. Aida cross stitch fabric – using a tapestry needle and 2-3 strands of embroidery floss. The cool thing about using this plastic (or perforated paper) is that you can cut a lacey decorative border around the piece – no finishing!

  • Cool, I didn’t know PC came in a size 14. Thanks for the heads up.

  • One of the cool things about 14 count PC is that all those wonderful threads in the needlepoint shop which are for 18 mesh canvas works beautifully on 14 mesh PC.

So your thread selection (and therefore the effects you can get are so much greater).

Combine this with the ease of finishing and it’s fantastic!

    Keep Stitching,
