Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Obsessive Consumption

Sooner or later, it seems that all good things migrate to Portland. And we’re now proud to be the new home of Kate Bingaman-Burt, who writes a fascinating blog called Obsessive Consumption. (Full disclosure: I haven’t met Kate, but I’m a big fan.)

The blog is simple in concept: Kate draws the things she buys, and then posts the drawings with notes. But it’s also very thought-provoking about the things we buy, how we feel about them, and their place in our lives.

So, Kate had a big Moving Sale in her Etsy shop a while back, and I scored some great things. Up top there is a drawing of one of her credit card statements, with “Love Your Money” screened on top.

I also scored some zines! Kate is a longtime zinester. Her daily Obsessive Consumption drawings get compiled into her monthly zine, which is called What Did You Buy Today?, and is also a beautiful thing.

Here’s a spread from What Did You Buy Today? volume two.

And – this one kind of blows my mind – an entire zine of hand-drawn credit card statements, along with Kate’s stories of her tribulations with each one and when she paid it off in full.

Anyway – do check out the Obsessive Consumption blog, and the zines. And, blow your money a big kiss, won’t you?
