A Sad Turn of Events

The last 48 hours haven’t been happy. We took Louie in to the vet, and were advised to return him to the Humane Society. Apparently all our ongoing struggles to get him to eat had some cause: Louie’s not well.

I don’t even have words to express how heartbroken K. and I both are at this turn of events. We’ve fallen in love with this little guy. I wish we had the means to offer him the kind of ongoing medical care he needs, but we just don’t. So we brought him back this morning. Hardest thing ever.

I feel it’s important to say that I don’t fault the Oregon Humane Society at all. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t have had a clearer picture of Louie’s health before we adopted him, but the OHS tries to serve so many kitties with stretched resources. These things happen.

Anyway, I’m going to take a few days off from internet things, finish out my emotional reactions, and rest. I’ll see you all later.

And, I can’t thank you enough for all the kind Tweets and Facebook notes. They’ve really helped.

  • Oh, Diane, I am so sorry to hear this . . .
  • Diane, I am so sorry to hear about this! It is bringing tears to my eyes. I hope you will think about getting a new kitty some time, whenever you feel ready for it. Take care and I hope things get better.
  • My deep condolences. I have a 12 year old humane society grey kitty who I love dearly, so this really hits home.
  • That is so heartbreaking. He is such a beautiful cat and looks so sweet. I know how sad is is for your.
  • I am so sorry to hear that. I am such a cat lover and we've only had rescue cat too. It is unfortunate that we don't always know when we're getting a sick kitty - that happened to me one time too and I was devastated. Sending you hugs.

So sorry to hear about your precious kitty :( All of my pets have been rescue pets and I totally understand how attached we instantly become to these wonderful beings. They are brought into our lives for a reason, and I know that Louie understood how deeply he was loved. Sending love and healing to you and Louie.
  • Hey Diane. So sorry to hear. Thinking of you.

Just found your blog and just read this entry. So so sorry for your loss. I know it couldn't be hard to turn him back over. I wish something else could have been worked out. But he knows he was loved for the time he was with you, and hopefully he can get the care he needs. I just wish he could be returned to you afterwards. Is there a chance of that? Hugs to you and yours.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. :( Is there any chance of OHS fixing him up and giving him back?
  • I totally understand your state of mind right now, you did your best, but sometimes nature takes it's own direction.. Wish you all the best!! xoxoxo
  • Oh that's just terrible. It's so hard to give up a pet. When I was in high school, our family dog that we had for nine years came into contact with a rabid fox. He was *just* over due for his rabies shots, and there is no way of knowing if he contracted it unless we waited it out - which would've involved putting him in solitary confinement for six months. He was so social, we decided that he never would be the same dog, even if we could afford it. So we had to put him down. We couldn't touch him, so I couldn't even pet him to say goodbye as they took him away. It was awful. So, in a nutshell, I can relate. And I'm sending you lots of hugs.
  • Diane --

I'm so sorry for you. We lost our favorite kitty in May after a short illness and I was devastated. This was after his older brother had to have one front leg amputated in March.

I was devastated by both events and really feel for you. Take care.

How sad. I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope it's some comfort knowing that you gave that kitty lots of love and care while you had him.
  • Felicity
Oh indeed that is sad news. You meet a cat, and and it's just a cat, but when you get to know them, they can have such vivid personalities. It is not a small thing to have to let him go.
  • so sorry diane. thinking of you.
  • I just burst into tears for you here! I am so, SO sorry to hear this news about your sweet Louie. Take care of yourselves. I'm sending healing thoughts in your direction.
  • HEY!
I just joined Twitter and found out that something was wrong.

Please contact me. Tell me what needs to be done. We can help you with the means, hopefully.
  • oh, i'm so sorry for you. I can't imagine how hard this must have been for you. i hope a healthy cat friend is coming your way soon, when your loss is not as raw. hugs.
  • futuregirl
Oh, that's terrible. I'm so sorry that kitty is not well and you're without him. :(
  • I'm very sorry for what happened! :( This is so sad. Please, do take the time needed. And like Niku said, he was lucky to spend time with you and K. as you took care of him the best that you could.

I know you are not ready yet, and probably won't be for a certain time, but I really do suggest to get another cat, eventually. There are just so many good cats who are looking for a home. And, even thought it will never ever replace Louie, it will help healing your sadness.

    (((Much hugs!!)))

So sorry. I know your heart must be aching right now. Take good care.
  • i'm shedding a few tears right now for such a precious little kitty.
    xo
  • so sad :(
  • I'm so sorry your kitty wasn't well. I still miss my cat who I had to have put to sleep over 5 years ago because of kidney failure. She was 15 years old and a wonderful companion. When she was 12, I developed allergies to cats. My allergist was most understanding and said she couldn't ask me to get rid of her and told me to just take my drugs. So I can't bring a new kitty into my house.

Oh, man! Returning a kitty to the Humane Society is the hardest thing ever! We had to do that once.. so very sad.

    **Big Hugs**

Oh, Diane. I'm so sorry. When you were opening your hearts to help out the little guy in the first place, I can only imagine how much that adds to your heartache. Hugs.
