I’ve been looking forward to this book coming out ever since I watched the Quilting Arts TV show back in June. At heart, The Quilting Arts Book is a beginning book about art-quilting. But also, it’s an amazing treasure-trove of ideas and techniques for altering and embellishing fabrics.

The book covers the art quilt process from A – Z: finding inspiration, keeping a sketchbook, design principles, and various assembly processes. And then, there are chapters on embellishment methods and surface design techniques. Throughout the book are essays and tips by Quilting Arts Magazine contributors.
Btw, that’s Reverse Applique by Charlotte Liddle up there – couldn’t you just swoon?

Also, there’s good discussion of several types of quilting – mixed-media quilting that involves found objects and beads and paper; whole cloth quilting, where you paint a design on the fabric and then quilt it; portrait quilts; journal quilts.
I love this gorgeous fabric collage by Katy Korkos.

I’m excited about the fabric-printing techniques here as well. This is good old block-printing, made really interesting by using two blocks: one with a positive image and one with a negative. The design is by Lucie Summers

. . . And these are just crazy-cool: Julie Hirota‘s photographs and drawings, layered in Photoshop and then printed onto fabric. Love those little tacks.

This is Angie Hughes, layering multiple techniques onto velvet. Amazing.
There’s lots more to get excited about: cool ideas with puff paints, making fabric from paper, foiling on fabric, quilting and needle felting…. This is a highly useful reference book, whether you quilt or just love to geek out on fabric.

I love thoses kind of “craft-meets-art” books. :-) It reminds me a little of the “art journals” books out there.
I must tell you, I just loved your two latest Craftypod. I especially liked the “Publishing a craft book” one where you tell your point of vue about getting an agent or not. When Christina said that you didn’t have to get an agent, I raised a brow… then I was SO happy you spoke about your point of vue as well. Very neat! ;-)

I was dreaming about art quilting last nigth, or well, not dreaming but grabbing a sketchbook for the first time and did several designs that came to mind… I thought I’d ordered the DVD back when you recommended but it never came so I guess I didn’t….:-/ I should do it now as I also want their new Studio issue! :-)
Thanks for a great review!
