Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

CRAFT 09: Coming at ya!

I’m a bit late to this party, but the new issue of CRAFT Magazine is out, and as usual, it rocks.

The theme this time is Green Crafting, as exemplified by cover girl Betz White‘s awesome fused plastic tote and rain hat. (Really need to make time to fuse some plastic in the new year. AAACK! There is is! The first instance of dividing life into “before the holidays” and “after the holidays!”)

I was thrilled to have two pieces in this issue. The first is a collaboration with the ever-awesome Rachel. Way back in January, we were discussing that ubiquitous marketing phrase, “It’s not your grandmother’s knitting.” (Or crochet. Or whatever.) Since we both knew of women who were awesome crafters and happened to be grandmothers, we decided to find out what that phrase means to them.

Thank you to our guests, Mimi Kirchner, Opal Cocke, Socorro Rivera, and Fredda Perkins for making this article sparkle!

And then, I contributed a piece about card-making. It covers three simple techniques that you can combine in endless ways to make all kinds of different cards.

What’s even cooler, in the center of the magazine is a pull-out blank for this card. You just follow the guides to machine-sew and embroider it, and it’s ready for sending. I always wanted to be a pull-out. :-)
