I think it’s a cool sign that the craft movement has arrived – we’re starting to make our own comedy!
I have two books in that vein to show you. First, Lain Ehmann, former podcast guest and contributing editor to Simple Scrapbooks Magazine, has authored Snippets: Mostly True Tales from the Lighter Side of Scrapbooking.
This is a fun collection of essays on the trials of managing your overflowing stash, creating devious ways to make time for your craft, stalking scrapbook celebrities, and plenty of other stuff creative folk will find all too familiar.
I loved Lain’s characterization of that common problem, the too-small craft nook:
Exactly how diminutive is my room? Let me put it this way—the previous occupant of our home used this space for handbag storage. And the only way I could host a friend for a crop night would be to suspend us both from the ceiling in hammocks, Gilligan-and-the-Skipper style. Not only would that be a tad bit uncomfortable, it would also make it really hard to set an eyelet without cracking someone’s coconut
Lain has such a warm, real-person way of expressing herself – the same warmth she exudes in her podcast. If you’re a fan of papercraft, you’ll dig this one. Get a sneak preview over here.

On the fiber side of things (and coincidentally, also green), we have Franklin Habit‘s new book, It Itches: A Stash of Knitting Cartoons. Franklin is a photographer, knitter, and blogger – and as it turns out, a dang keen observer of the world of fiber arts. I loved these cartoons – I’m not even a knitter, and I was giggling. Here’s a sample:

The whole thing makes me want to make a zine that’s kind of a “crafty funny papers.” There’s so much funny inherent in our obsession with creating, materials, and tools, and all the mishaps that go on during the process of making.
Stepping awaaaaaay from that idea, though. I do not need another project. Nooooooooo way.

Thank you SO MUCH for this! I think she’s fabulous, I loved your interview with her, and I listen to her regularly. And is this an idea whose time has come, or WHAT?
As youknow, my roots are in scrapbooking, and occasionally I even have them touched up. So this will be a great yule gift… to myself!

Oh! I jumped the gun! I just came back from pre-ordering Lain’s book and see that the next review is about the perfect book for my knitting friend!
Tell me the truth…
you’re sent from the gods, aren’t you?
