I picked up a new load of book covers for my upcoming book purse classes this morning. They’re so amazing, I couldn’t resist photographing them to share with you!

Folks at the libraries tell me that these covers are from the 60′s and 70′s. When a library book would get too beat-up to circulate, the library system would send it out to be re-bound. And those sturdy new bindings would be emblazoned with these patterns.

Nowadays, libraries are apparently more likely to discard a beat-up book and replace it with a new one – or, rebind it and laminate the old cover to the new binding. No more beautiful graphics. I wonder who created these patterns?

It’s so odd, but with all my hours in libraries, I’ve never really noticed these bindings in the stacks. Now, I’ll be keeping an eye open.
And I’ll be having fun watching all of these become cute handbags in the near future!

You dismantled Mortimer Adler’s How To Read A Book????
Oh, I think I’m going to faint.
But the patterns ARE gorgeous. Like old wallpaper. We had some great stuff in an 1880′s house we lived in once. Unfortunately, most of the rooms had several layers on top of each other, and then were painted over, so the patterns were only revealed as dh steamed them off.

Okay, how much are the classes, where are they, can I walk there from the airport, and can I sleep on your patio?
While awaiting your response, I’ll go book my flight.

Those are lovely! But I just don’t think I could handle eviscerating a book. This must be what separates the pro’s from the amateurs. I keep buying beat up books to use in collage, but then I just can’t cut them up…

I have never seen rebound books like that. Around here, I have only seen plain covers, usually dark green. And, they are usually in perfect condition because as far as I can tell, nobody ever takes the book out again after it is recovered in ugly green! I used to run a used book fair at my kids’ elementary school and the librarian would dump lots of the recovers into the sale.

I ♥ every one of these patterns! Thanks for sharing, I would make really cool notebooks with these but I think your handbag classes will be a so fun when you show up with these!!!! Be careful though, maybe people will start a fight to get to pick first!? ;-) Loved the post on craft books with humor too, will have to check both of them out.

A book that’s called ‘How to read a Book’, could it be more surreal than that? Do I need to read that book before I read that book? :)

I adore those covers! And the purse project is a great way to keep them in circulation (haha).
