Appropriate for the first day of Winter…

Happy Solstice, everyone! Portland continues to be buried under an ever-thickening blanket of snow. Although today, apparently, we’ll break the monotony with an ice storm.

Anyway, last night, as we were turning out lights at bedtime, K. and I noticed how pretty this scene looked, and busted out the tripod to capture it.

Our deck is piled – that bird-feeder roof gives you a good idea of today’s accumulation. And, those poor plants. They totally hate me.

Pull up a chair!

The tree looks so pretty in the soft light. I took about one million pictures like this.

Honestly, in some ways, all this snow has been a blessing. Everything I had scheduled for the past week ended up getting cancelled, so I’ve had a lot of time to just hang out. And I was nearing the edge of burnout, so I’ve really needed that.

I even managed to finish my Craft Leftovers Vellus kit! It’s a plastic canvas base, which is ingeniously folded and stitched to make a puffy square. Because Kristin‘s a genius.

Oh – and I made a snow angel. Then I went back inside.

We ventured a mile or so to Safeway to get sugar for cookies and special snacks for the cozy day by the fire. Stay safe!

  • I love that snowed-in feeling with so much found time. Snow brings so much peaceful quiet. We haven’t gotten as much as I’d been hoping for up here, but oh! I just looked up and it’s started lightly snowing again. Happy.

What a fabulous snow angel! It’s sort of a Vitruvian woman snow angel. I am loving this very wintery winter weather!

I hope you guys don’t have to leave the house much for a while. Thank goodness you both work at home. :) That’s a beautiful scene on the deck, though! And that Christmas tree! (swoon!)

I was afraid some of the storms were heading our way, so I figured out how to get to work mostly underground. I can whittle my outside exposure down to 2 blocks, if necessary.

  • Wow! You really did get a lot of snow down there! We have several inches up here to the north.

We’ll be venturing out to the grocery store a little later – on foot of course! The walk in the snow should be lovely.

    Stay warm! :-)

  • What beautiful pictures!

Isn’t this snow crazy! I’m enjoying it more since I managed to go to the grocery store before it hit hard. And I’m so happy that I’m making most of our gifts, so I don’t need to go shopping!

You are brave to go out and actually lay in the snow! I haven’t stepped foot out since Friday night. Thankfully Denny is more than happy to take the kids out to play!

  • Thanks for sharing these pictures. I love the way the lights looks against the snow. And, I would have a hard time pulling myself away from that gorgeous tree.

  • Kristin’s ornament looks great! I just finished my first kid of hers…a knitted dishcloth, which I love. Ornaments and tree and snow angels…these are the perfect things of Christmas. I love all the vintage x-mas stuff you’ve been posting, by the way! Esp. the 1960′s craft stuff!!!

  • Diane,
The snow is amazing! Yesterday it was 37 deg here in Melbourne (98.7 deg C), but even in Winter the temperatures rarely get below zero, and then only at night.
Your photos are really beautiful – thank you for sharing them and for the Craftypod podcasts, which have made me a firm podcast devotee.
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
    Kind regards,
    Karen.
