Today is the release day for Button It Up, the latest book by my dear friend Susan! To celebrate, let’s have a giveaway….
To enter to win a copy, leave a comment here and tell me about your all-time favorite buttons. I’ll take entries until noon PST on Wednesday, March 4th. Then I’ll draw one winner at random. International readers, you are welcome to enter.
The book is already getting great reviews. Here’s mine, and Sarah’s, and the Portland Mercury’s.
And, best of all, March is Button It Up Month on CraftStylish! Button-related tutorials, all month long. I can’t wait!

UPDATE: Congratulations to Oona B, who won the book! I’m emailing you now for your address…

Woot, a giveaway! ^-^
I will love anything that has an antique feel to it. Something that looks like it has an history to it.
And thoses huge buttons that were once seen on one of Adorn’s magazine cover. They were made of plastic and had rich bright colors to them. They were amazing!
And I also have a thing for fabric-covered buttons. :-)

I have ‘button love’ and actually I’ve quite a few jars (sorted by color for visual impact on my studio shelf). I have to say tho that I really love my vintage & rare/odd ones the most. Would love to win this book!!
I loved just looking through a cedar box of my grandmother’s that held tons of buttons. I think I had a favorite one each time I looked in it.

My grandma gave me a few fancy buttons a few years ago – two of them were rhinestone buttons that she’d gotten when she was a kid. I still haven’t decided what to do with them.

When I got my Grandmother’s old sewing machine some of the drawers in the cabinet were full of buttons. They were carefully threaded on string in their matching sets. These buttons are very old and are made of bone, wood, glass and metal. I just LOVE them!

I am currently enamored with covered buttons- for my hair bands, crafts, etc!

I’ve recently started a collection of vintage buttons on cards. I am hoping to make a shadow box or some other piece of art with a few of them. I love the mixture of the old buttons with the vintage typography.

Just looking at that cover makes me happy.

I have a growing collection of mother-of-pearl and shell buttons that I just love. They feel so wonderful and cool to the touch; smooth on one side and bumpy and natural on the other. There is one in particular that is hexagonal shape and soft grey in colour – I want to make an outfilt around it.

I LOVE every single button in my Grandmother’s button tin. Since I inherited her Singer (formerly a treadle), my sister got the buttons. I’ll need to look at them again the next time I visit her.

[...] sites are doing very generous giveaways. First, Button Sampler Tote designer Diane Gilleland is offering up a copy: tell her a button story by Wednesday at noon and you’re entered to win! I love the comments people have left so far. [...]
Hmmm, well, I’m not sure I’ve ever met a button I DIDN’T love! I hoard them – have tons of them in jars ‘cuz I love to use them in my projects. How very sweet of you to do a give-a-way! Thanks!!

My great-grandma had a coat that had the biggest lime green buttons ever. Ever since I saw that coat, I have been in love with huge chunky buttons.

My favourite buttons are old , black and diamante encrusted and look more like a bead than a button. i like to take them out and look at them and make plans for them, but haven;t found the perfect use yet.

oh man, i don’t know, i’m not the most button-crazy person in the world. i prefer ones with proper holes over shank buttons, and i like a festive assortment rather than all the same kind. i also prefer buttons as adornment rather than as function objects (not that i don’t appreciate being able to hold two pieces of fabric together…).

My favorite buttons were from when I was a child, removed from my grandmother’s sewing machine drawers because they caught my eye for their sparkle or simply roundedness. Some buttons are from favorite pajamas, no longer re-attached when they drop off because the pjs themselves were worn beyond mending.

My button supply is seriously lacking! But a friend has a large jar full and when we made a purse, we looked through to find a great one. I found a fantastic yellow one! I love it so much. I want my own collection!

My love of making things set me apart from the other people in my family, who considered themselves “normal” while I was, in their kinder moments, considered “odd”.
That’s okay with me. Besides joy in making things and loving things made by hands, my odd ways made me the logical recipient of my Great Aunt’s large button tin when she died. Great Aunt lived upstairs from us, made most of my clothing, and I believe is the person I inherited my love of making things from. The tin has buttons I remember being selected for jackets and dresses she made for me, as well as buttons reaped from shirts headed to the rag bag. Auntie was a thrifty woman in the best way; she knew when to save and when to splurge. If not for Aunt, I wouldn’t have had my hems let down when I grew too tall for my skirts and I wouldn’t have had the surprise of a real capelet from the prom dress store for the dance I wanted to look perfect for, nor the pretty lingerie for under my wedding dress either.
Aunt is gone now, but I revere and revisit the button tin and she seems near when I do.

My favorite buttons are from my mom’s collection. They are puffy and a grey colour with carved sides. I keep them in her original tin container with all the rest of her buttons. When I open them they are always the first I see and it brings me a smile.

There are some buttons I saw at Joann Fabric Store that I love. They have flapper faces on them. There’s black one and red ones.

My favorite button is a aquamarine scalloped button that is actually my daughter’s. She has a small button collection and we have lost that darned button in her room more times than I can count. Eventually, it always turns up, and I love to see that she is so excited about buttons like her mama.

I come from a long line of seamstresses and my parents run a factory outlet that also sells sewing notions today. My grandmother’s basement has always had one whole wall piled from floor to ceiling with the various fabric pieces she got at remnant sales where she worked for 35 years. As a kid, we used to hide things in the piles, or just stick our arms in between the folds — I remember the feel of different textures, and the fabric being cool to the touch. My favorite thing though was an old beat up trunk because that’s where she kept her buttons. The bottom was filled with jars of all sizes separated out by color or size, but the top tray was where the special buttons were. There were pearl buttons of all sizes and some that looked like diamond studs. I was particularly enamored with a set of pearly ones that had tiny rhinestones embedded in them — little balls with fake diamond dots all around. A lot of those buttons have been sold in my parent’s shop now. Man, I miss the sparkly ones… Thanks for letting me share.

i found some of my favorite buttons at whizbang fabric’s going-out-of-business sale a few weeks ago. they had blue glass buttons that looked like miniature beetles… they had wooden buttons galore… they had pearl buttons and rhinestones, all colors and shapes and sizes, sorted into glass jars (exactly as i store mine!). they’re gorgeous :) i love the different textures and feels of buttons… the different materials used to make them as well as the way they can spruce up a particular jacket or bag.

My favorite buttons are in my mom’s collection and they are from the 1940s. They are big navy blue circles with red and white nautical anchors on them. I love and covet them!
