The Big Crafty Weekend: Part 1

Okay, so – my fun-filled weekend. There’s so much to report, this might become a few posts.

What a bounty of visiting friends: Handmade Nation brought Rachel, Betsy, Michaela, Jennifer, Kim, and Garth to town. Locally, we mixed in Susan, Lee, Theresa, Heather, and Sarah, along with partners and children.

There were lots of events and places to visit (here we are, invading the Knittn’ Kitten). But the real joy of the weekend was the luxury of having all these people physically together. I once wrote in a zine:

“When you’re in a group of real-live people, and a spontaneous joke happens, or a great conversation, that’s a 3D moment.

There are so many unique sensory elements involved: the sights, sounds, and smells of the place you’re all in, plus the facial expressions and voices of the other people. There’s your emotional state, and the emotions of the other people. There’s the energy of the group as a whole, and the feeling of connection. All these elements make for vivid, memorable experiences.”

The weekend was filled with 3D moments. I know I interact with most of these folks online every day, but I feel like those few days of in-person time brought us closer by leaps and bounds.

. . . And, what’s better than the company of like minds? You definitely want some people in your life who are capable of reverently combing through shelves of Japanese craft books with you for hours.

This gets said all the time, of course, but I’m so grateful that the internet provides such easy ways to find and connect with kindred spirits. For most of my life, I felt very alone in my craftiness, unable to find another maker even in my own neighborhood. And now, I get to be part of a community that spans the world, in which everyone is creative and interesting and fun.

. . . Hmmm. Yup, clearly, this is going to need more than one post.

  • So great! I wish I could've been there! (We are in need of a 3D moment I think...)
  • Hallelujah! You said it all! Why is it so hard for many people to believe that the internet can create "real" friendships? I wish I had been there :-)
  • *jealous*!!
  • I enjoyed reading this post. It made me remember a crafty community I was a part of and inspired me to post something I wrote once.
  • I know what you mean! Thanks, looking forward to the next post.

This is so true... "For most of my life, I felt very alone in my craftiness, unable to find another maker even in my own neighborhood. And now, I get to be part of a community that spans the world, in which everyone is creative and interesting and fun."...and well said!

Thanks for a wonderful post, and blog!

The weekend must have been great fun, meeting and learning. I am most eager to discover the name of the bookstore displaying all of the Japanese craft books. Would you share the vendor's name? I have seen titles of Japanese titles but do not know an American source for ordering. I truly had lust in my heart when I saw the photograph of all those books (grin).
  • This already is a very touching post, Diane. :-) You will defenetely need to write more about your wonderful week-end!

And I also agree very much that the virtual world is fun, but there's nothing like meeting people for real. :-)

Wow, that sounds like such an awesome weekend!

I can't wait until I am closer to a city that actually has fun, awesome crafty stuff!
  • "I know I interact with most of these folks online every day, but I feel like those few days of in-person time brought us closer by leaps and bounds."

I could not agree more, which is why this kind of weekend needs to be - at the very least - an annual event. For reals.

    Best. Weekend. Ever.

Miss all of you already! :)
