Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

I’m now the steward of my family’s button stash!

In the OMG, OMG, OMG Department, my grandmother recently sent me a box of buttons. Some are from her stash, and some are from my great great grandmother’s stash. Yes, I pretty much was freaking out.

I still have a lot of sorting and photographing to do, but here are a few early highlights! I love imagining what kind of dress these red glass buttons came from.

My great great grandmother, who we called Grammie, was a great seamster, cook, and maker. Mom recently blogged about an amazing hand-sewn Double Wedding Ring quilt top she made.

(Sigh. Filigree.)

Grammie also saved buttons. These Girl Scout buttons came from Mom’s uniform.

Some of these may have some collector value, but I don’t really care about that. I’m an equal-opportunity button-lover.

These are tiny – like doll-sized. Smaller than a dime. Which makes those little green deer impossibly precious.

These little pink doll buttons are also wonderful. They make me think of frilly Easter dresses and doll clothes.

And there are two of these crazy sword closures! Seriously, what coat were these on? I want that coat. I don’t know whether I’ll reuse these, or just look at them periodically and cackle to myself.

There’s still lots to show, including some pretty carded sets on vintage cards. And some shank buttons from my grandmother’s stash in beautiful, jewel-like colors, which likely need a project of their very own.

  • Wow! I thought you were up to your ears in taxes! And I find you are playing with your new button stash.

The black one in the second photo – I was thrilled to see it again! It was one of my absolute favorites to play with.

And my girl scout uniorm buttons! Never expected to see them again!

Don’t remember the deer. They are precious. Can’t wait to see the whole stash.

Those little deer shank buttons are just too sweet.
I was also lucky enough to inherit my granny’s collection, which features on my new blog. Which is why i’ m excited to read your new e-book.

WOW!!! I am so jealous! I had a somewhat similiar experience a few weeks ago but not from a sentimental standpoint. I went down to my basement to get some of my other crafting stuff and came across this shoe box filled with buttons. I remember buying them at a yard sale @ 30 years ago. I was only 10 at the time but I liked small little objects to play with (there must have been a doll in it or something). I could not believe my eyes! Granted they aren’t as old as your buttons but boy did I have fun going through them!

Shoot! I should have included the link in my comment, so you didn't have to go looking all over. Thank you so much for all the lovely comments!

Am I responding “in the body” as it says below? I hope so.

    Diane,

Are you one of the contributors to the Button and Stitch book? If so (or
even if not), would you mind if I included a link to your collection? It's
truly amazing, and it adds a whole 'nother layer of nuance to why we
    collect.

    Best,
    Pat

Hi, Pat – sure, feel free! And thank you!

…And no, I was not a contrib for Button & Stitch. Cute book, though!
