In the OMG, OMG, OMG Department, my grandmother recently sent me a box of buttons. Some are from her stash, and some are from my great great grandmother’s stash. Yes, I pretty much was freaking out.
I still have a lot of sorting and photographing to do, but here are a few early highlights! I love imagining what kind of dress these red glass buttons came from.

My great great grandmother, who we called Grammie, was a great seamster, cook, and maker. Mom recently blogged about an amazing hand-sewn Double Wedding Ring quilt top she made.
(Sigh. Filigree.)

Grammie also saved buttons. These Girl Scout buttons came from Mom’s uniform.

Some of these may have some collector value, but I don’t really care about that. I’m an equal-opportunity button-lover.
These are tiny – like doll-sized. Smaller than a dime. Which makes those little green deer impossibly precious.

These little pink doll buttons are also wonderful. They make me think of frilly Easter dresses and doll clothes.

And there are two of these crazy sword closures! Seriously, what coat were these on? I want that coat. I don’t know whether I’ll reuse these, or just look at them periodically and cackle to myself.
There’s still lots to show, including some pretty carded sets on vintage cards. And some shank buttons from my grandmother’s stash in beautiful, jewel-like colors, which likely need a project of their very own.

You just totally made my morning :)

Diane –
I am so jealous. I don’t have my grandmother’s (which was huge), but I do have my mother-in-law’s and it sits on my desk in a pretty jar where it can inspire me.
Lately I’ve been thinking about button magnets.
Keep Stitching,
Janet

YAAAAY! I have been waiting to see some pictures of The Button Collection. So amazing! I am so happy they are in the hands of someone who will appreciate them to the nth degree. And, yes, I can feel your smile radiating throughout this post.
Awe.Some. WOooo! :)

Oh, these are just so lovely! I have been trying to figure out how to use buttons in some of the mural artwork we are doing. Obviously they would be photographed for reproduction, but I think they would be so great in some flowers or other designs. A fun detail. Thanks for sharing photos of your collection :-)

You are so lucky! I want to be the button steward in my family! Judging from how crafty my mum is thought, I don’t think that day is coming any time soon, haha.

Those are so amazing/beautiful/cute/precious! But I’ve got a question for you… I recently bought a wooden chest full of buttons from an estate sale. And, frankly, they stink. As in, have a really really foul smell. I took some out, soaked them in dish soap for hours, dried them one at a time, and… they still smell. Have you ever come across this issue before? I don’t think it’s the chest itself, and it’s not like there was anything except buttons and the old cardstock and threads in there… help?!

Thank you for sharing. You’re very lucky. How I wish I could claw some of my grandmother’s buttons from my oldest sister’s hands.

I love that sword closure! something you don’t see all the time and I too would love the coat they were on, even if it was to take the closures off and put them on something else :p

No way. What a wonderful honor that you’ve been given! This tiny peek into the stash is dazzling. How are you getting any work done with so many little treasures to touch?!

Ooh, you are lucky. I inherited some of my grandmother’s but she was a reluctant seamstress, so it’s not an exciting collection. She did, however, cut the buttons off of all the garments that were to become rags.

so much fun! And better then any other button find because they belonged to your great great grandmother. So much history in the little bits- sigh :-)

Wow, wow, wow!! You’ve had quite the scores and gifts lately!!! So awesome for you. :) Have three boys, and a recent Robin Hood birthday, I am particularly loving the sword closures. How great are they? On wool pea coats, I’d say. :D Have fun!!

Diane, I seriously love these. I just used four of my favorite favorite buttons on a giftie, and I am going to miss those babies! I am going to start a serious button search in the coming weeks, because my stash is small and cute. I LOVE these pictures! I wonder where my girl scout buttons went? I look forward to seeing the rest of your marvelous treasure. Congrats to you!
now I’m off to listen impatiently to Margot.

Wow, aren’t you the lucky one! In addition to scoring the button stash, you are actually fortunate enough to have known your great-great-grandmother. I’ll bet she told some great stories about the provenance of those fabulous buttons. The red glass ones are my favorites of what you’ve shown so far!
